If you were to ask your friends who their biggest inspiration is, chances are you’re going to get a lot of them saying it’s their mother. Mothers definitely play a huge part in our lives. They’re the ones who brought us into this world and they’re the ones who are going to see us through all the unforgiving calamities that life has to throw at us.
But, we take them for granted at times and we forget to show them how much we appreciate them. If you still have no clue as to why you should give thanks to your mom, here’s 20 things you can start with. So, go on! Give your mom a huge hug after reading this and give her your thanks!
It’ll make her day every day.
We often forget to be grateful for the simple things in life, like being given the chance to live and breathe for another day.
You’ll never know what it’s like to carry someone for 9 months, or what your mother went through when she gave birth to you… unless you become one yourself. So for all those who’ll never know the pain of having to go through 9 hours of labour, thank your mom for that.
It’s hard to take sides as a mother. They always try to take your side when you get in trouble. They’ll say you’re not always like this and it won’t happen again. They save your sorry self. But sometimes, they have no choice but to let you take the fall, especially if you’ve done something really wrong. And sometimes, it hurts them even more.
But, even then, they’re always there to catch us. They’ll always be there to nurse our wounds and carry us until we’re strong enough to be on our own again. And if it’s time for them to take our side again, we can count on them to be right there beside us.
Everyone has bad days. What’s worse than having a bad day? Having to go to school when you’re having a bad day. It makes you sick to the stomach. So when you need that extra break from school, mothers know what to do.
They’ll hesitate to write that parents letter at first, but after much begging, convincing and puppy eyes, they just won’t have the heart to send you to school anymore. Best mom ever!
Mothers constantly encourage you to break barriers and to be extraordinary. They believe in you wholeheartedly and they know you’re capable of achieving greater things.
They never fail to make you feel like you’re super special, even if sometimes you doubt whether that’s the case. In her eyes, you’re the superstar and she’ll never stop pushing you until you believe you’re one.
Nothing beats home-cooked food, especially if it’s your favourite dish. I tried cooking before and boy, it was hard work! From getting the ingredients at the supermarket to chopping vegetables to risking getting scalded by the piping hot oil. By the time I was done, I was completely exhausted. I have no idea how mothers manage to do it every single day, without complaining.
On top of that, they still wash the dishes, wash your clothes, iron your clothes, pay bills and do everything else. Superwoman indeed.
How many of you have screamed for your mother when there’s a cockroach in your bathroom or a lizard in the living room? I have, countless times. Like a hero, my mom will come running in with Shieldtox or a newspaper to fend off the pest.
Without mothers, we probably won’t survive the pest attack. We would have probably fainted when that lizard inched closer to us.

I cannot thank my mom enough for always knowing where my things are at home. She can always find the camera USB cable or the ever-missing bobby pin that I need. Basically, mothers know where everything is kept in the house and you’ll never hesitate to call for her help.
Sometimes we forget that they’re humans too and when they can’t find something for us, we get angry at them. Take this time then to thank your mom for all the things that she did help you find.
They loved us as an innocent child and they loved us during our awkward teenage phase. They loved us when we were rebels and they’ll love us even as adults.
Although they can get frustrated with us at times and vice versa, you know that they’ll always be there for you… in case you get into some deep shit. They’re the ones who have tolerated us since birth and that’s saying something.
Mothers are undoubtedly our biggest supporters and our number 1 fans. They’ll be there to cheer us on when we win and comfort us when we don’t. No matter what, they’ll always be there by our side.
Even when we push them away, they’ll still be lingering near us, ready to jump in when we need a shoulder to cry on or that extra helping hand.
You think it’s annoying that your mother keeps asking you to create a Facebook account for her or when she keeps asking you how to work the iPhone. But all she wants to do is stay close to you. Think about it.
You go off to school early in the morning and come home late at night, she barely has time to bond with you. She feels like she’s no longer in touch with your life and the only way she could feel like she’s a part of your life is to be Facebook friends with you.
We never truly know all the sacrifices that our mothers have made just to keep us going. Like that day when she had to take no-pay leave so she could take you to the doctor or attend your graduation. Or that time when she risked being scolded by her husband because she was too busy defending you.
Mothers sacrifice a lot for their children. Your mom has sacrificed so much for you. I think they deserve at least a thank you for that.
Shame on you if you’ve ever forgotten your mother’s birthday. You won’t forgive yourself but you know she always does. She’ll always understand how sometimes it just slips your mind, and though she may be a little heartbroken, she will never show it.
You think it’s just a small issue – forgetting someone’s birthday. But mothers have feelings too, just like us. How would you feel if someone you love forgets your birthday?
It’s ridiculous when your mom makes spelling errors or isn’t in touch with the internet lingo these days. They keep asking you what YOLO means or what SWAG is like and you just can’t be bothered to answer them sometimes.
Other times, they’re just super hilarious and can brighten your day immediately. Their ridiculous texts provide comic relief especially after you’ve had a long day in school. Just check out some of these texts:
Your mom attempts to be the ‘cool mom’ every time she’s around your friends. You cringe at how friendly she suddenly becomes and how cool she suddenly looks, but you still appreciate the gesture. They never intend to embarrass you so don’t get angry at them.
Everyone appreciates ‘cool’ mothers everywhere. Even if they’re seriously not even that cool.
Thank goodness for the days when your mother sends you to school so you’re won’t be late to school. Thank goodness that you didn’t have to wrestle with people to get on the train or the bus. Thank goodness you get to enjoy the breeze of the air-con instead of the stale air on public transport.
You’re one lucky kid if your mom sends you to school. Remember that.
C’mon admit it. If your mom didn’t nag at you to do your homework or scold you for failing your exam, you wouldn’t be where you are today.
When you’re still a teenager, you’d think your mom was crazy, forcing you to study like that. But when you grow older, you realise that without the constant scoldings, you would probably have procrastinated and not graduated at all.
In our eyes, mothers can do no wrong. They’re the definition of perfect. They’re superwomen. When they fall ill, we hate having to be independent because there’s no one to send us to school or cook dinner for us.
But just like everyone else, they have their own flaws and insecurities. Yet they put up a brave front because they don’t want our own insecurities to eat us up on the inside. They want to show us that it’s okay to be imperfect. They want to show us that it’s okay to have flaws, we just can’t let it get to us.
Mothers have such a high level of patience, it’s unbelievable. When we do something wrong, they’ll be there to guide us on the right path. When we refuse to reply their messages or pick up their calls, they’ll wait up for us, just so they know we’re safe.
They may scold you at times but at the end of the day, they meant well. Apart from those times, they’ve always put up with our antics… especially with how we don’t bother cleaning our room every single day.
A mother loves unconditionally. That’s a fact. Our joy is their joy, our sadness is their grieve. There is nothing like a mother’s love for her child. To quote Agatha Christie, “A mother’s love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity, it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path.”
There is nothing like knowing your mother still loves you despite all that you’ve done to her. It’s nice to know that at least someone cares, and there’s always someone you can count on.
