Yishun Heritage Trail

Nope, we’re not here to make another Yishun joke. This time, we’re shining the spotlight on something worth exploring in the neighbourhood. The National Heritage Board (NHB) has launched a refreshed Yishun Heritage Trail, which aims to take visitors through the town’s transformation across different eras.

So if you’ve always been curious about the history behind this much-talked-about neighbourhood or you’ve lived in Yishun for years but never knew the stories hiding in plain sight, this trail is a chance to see the estate in a whole new light.

What’s the Yishun Heritage Trail all about?

The Yishun Heritage Trail was first launched in 2010 as part of the Yishun-Sembawang Heritage Trail. Now, it has been refreshed into its own dedicated free, self-guided trail, giving you a chance to uncover the stories behind the neighbourhood at your own pace.

It features 17 heritage sites, 8 trail markers, and 2 themed routes. As you make your way around the trail, you’ll learn surprising bits of Yishun’s past and even get to visit places like the former Nee Soon Post Office.

What’s new in the trail?

Prepare to learn a thing or two if your knowledge of Yishun starts and ends with Northpoint City and the internet memes. This refreshed trail now covers the lesser-known chapters of Yishun’s history, including the stories of Seletar, Chan Chu Kang, and Chye Kay Village.

For instance, did you know that the Orang Seletar were the 1st inhabitants of the Seletar area?

And while Nee Soon Village gave present-day Yishun its name, much of the HDB estate we know today was actually built on the former Chye Kay Village. What started out as pineapple and rubber plantations eventually grew into one of Singapore’s leading producers of tropical fish, before the village was cleared in the late 1970s to make way for Yishun New Town.

The trail is also dotted with 8 heritage markers that highlight landmarks that make up Yishun over the years. These include Chong Pang City, Masjid Ahmad Ibrahim, and Sree Maha Mariamman Temple.

Keep an eye out for these markers as you explore to learn about the stories behind places you might have walked past countless times without giving them a second thought.

And if you’re wondering where to begin, there are curated routes – Rockets and Reservoirs and Yishun Ring Route – to kickstart your journey. Just follow the companion guide and map, which include historical tidbits and directions to help you navigate the trail.

What are the suggested trail routes?

Not everyone has half a day to spare, so the Yishun Heritage Trail comes with 2 themed routes depending on how much time you have and what you’d like to see more of.

The Rockets and Reservoirs route will take roughly 1 hour to complete via public transport. You’ll spot the distinctive spaceship-inspired architecture that defined many buildings in the 1990s, while learning about the area’s earlier days before it became the HDB estate we know today.

If you have more time to spare, consider the Yishun Ring Route, which will take about 2.5 hours via public transport. As its name suggests, this trail centres around Yishun Ring Road, which was built in the early 1980s as the town began taking shape. You’ll explore landmarks and traces of the former Chye Kay Village, piecing together what life was like before rows of HDB blocks and shopping malls took over.
