Casual Poet Library
Most of us love visiting Singapore’s national libraries. We’ve got gems like the Queenstown Public Library, Singapore’s oldest, and of course, the main National Library Building. But what if we told you there’s another way for readers to gather, and it’s tucked right under an HDB block?
Enter Casual Poet Library, a small shared library located at the void deck of a HDB block in Bukit Merah, about a 5-minute walk from IKEA Alexandra. The space was inspired by the founder’s holiday to Japan in April, where she stumbled upon the country’s first community library. She then decided to recreate a similar concept back home, so that book lovers can share their favourite reads with one another.
Rent a bookshelf & share your favourite books

The concept behind Casual Poet Library is simple but charming. Instead of the usual library system, individuals can rent their own bookshelf by paying a monthly fee of $45/month to become a “bookshelf owner”. There’s a one-time admin fee of $25.

Each shelf is curated by its owner, who decides which books to display. Many also include little note cards introducing themselves and sharing their personal book recommendations, giving visitors a glimpse into why those titles matter to them. The idea is that every shelf is like a mini book garden, lovingly tended by its owner and constantly evolving.

The library itself is open to everyone. Visitors can drop by to browse the shelves, flip through the books, or even sit down and read for free. If you’d like to bring books home, there’s a simple borrowing system with an annual membership fee of $25. Plus, all library members can borrow up to 5 books per visit.
Writing circles, author talks & a cosy spot to hang out

Besides just borrowing books, Casual Poet Library also hosts small community events that bring bibliophiles together. One regular activity is their writing circles, where participants gather to write and share poetry, prose, and creative nonfiction. The sessions are open to everyone, so whether you’re an experienced writer or just curious to try putting your thoughts on paper, you’re welcome to join in.
The space has also hosted talks by authors and publishers, including a past session organised by Ethos Books. If you’ve been wanting to hear directly from your fave writers about their work and creative process, keep a lookout for future sessions.

Even when there’s no event happening, the library still makes for a cosy spot to meet a friend or two. You can browse the shelves, discover new titles, or simply sit down with a book for a quiet afternoon.
Spend a cosy afternoon at Casual Poet Library
At a time when we’re used to spending time on our phones or computers, maybe an afternoon at the library is exactly what the doctor ordered. The next time you’re in need of some alone time or when you’re exploring the Bukit Merah neighbourhood, check out Casual Poet Library. You might just leave with your new favourite reads, as recommended by fellow book lovers.
