After Suffering From Eczema For A Decade, Here’s How I Manage The Itch In Singapore’s Relentless Heat

Eczema care in Singapore’s climate

The weather has been excruciatingly hot in Singapore. You can tell from the high-temp alerts on your phone, news reports about historical extremes, and pretty much just stepping outside to feel the scorching sun almost baking you, resulting in profuse sweat and major discomfort. For eczema sufferers, this agony is multiplied tenfold.

As someone who has grappled with acute eczema and chronic flare-ups over the years, this surge in temperature spells bad news for my skin. In my search for effective eczema care in Singapore’s climate, Suu Balm was a brand which popped up a lot in recommendations from family and friends.

More importantly, it was also name-dropped by fellow eczema sufferers who seemed to visibly improve their condition. I took the highly acclaimed Suu Balm body wash and moisturiser for a whirl and within 2 weeks, the results surprised me.

Trying Suu Balm for sensitive & eczema-prone skin

Besides the clear physical agony, eczema sufferers know the emotional toll of trying to find suitable skincare products. With such an overwhelming amount of choices on the market, it’s not feasible to buy each one to take them for a spin. Oftentimes, it turns out to be unsuitable or ineffective, especially given the sensitive nature of eczema-prone skin. All this means money down the drain, and a gradual wearing down of the psyche.

I’ve amassed an overloaded cupboard’s worth of lotions and moisturisers over the years, totalling more expenses than my heart can bear to calculate. Like most eczema sufferers, I’ve also received plenty of recommendations from well-meaning folks who swear they’ve discovered a miracle product – only to find that it’s of dubious formulation.

Given my turbulent journey in the hunt for reliable and effective eczema care products, you can imagine how elated I was to find something that finally spelled a ray of hope. After hearing rave reviews of Suu Balm’s efficacy left and right, I decided to try out their offerings myself.

You know how certain products are tagged with a “recommended by dermatologists” claim? I feel you. It’s so common nowadays that after a while, the endorsement doesn’t seem to hold much weight. Well, Suu Balm is not just recommended by dermatologists, but formulated by an actual expert dermatologist, mind you. From Singapore’s National Skin Centre (NSC), no less!

That already gives me a lot of assurance of the product’s quality and legitimacy. It’s not just because it’s backed by the national authority of all things skin-related, but also because it’s formulated by an expert dermatologist at NSC who understands the nature of skin issues within Singapore’s climate. And thus, what it takes to combat the symptoms.

It’s a pain – literally and figuratively – to have to navigate any hidden nasties when trying out new eczema care products. That’s why I could heave a sigh of relief when taking Suu Balm’s products for a spin. Because it’s backed by research and findings from NSC, I can rest assured that there’ll be zero preservatives, steroids, parabens, soaps, sulfates, and fragrances.

Eczema Care Suu Balm Moisturiser

While a nice scent is usually a pleasant plus point for those blessed with unproblematic skin, fragrance-free products are the way to go to avoid further irritation on my delicate, eczema-prone dermis.

Eczema Care Moisturiser Suu Balm

Their Rapid Itch Relief Moisturiser (from $23.90 for 75ml) has a lightweight and non-sticky formula that is deeply moisturising. Suu Balm’s formulation has 5 types of skin-identical ceramides that replenish the skin barrier. Besides helping my parched skin to feel instantly hydrated, the moisturiser also contains natural menthol for a nice, cooling effect which alleviates the itching sensation.

Eczema Care Singapore Heat
SG’s heat nowadays makes it torturous to head out without a fan and umbrella in tow.

With all the sweating and stickiness that Singapore’s heat and humidity is causing, showers are an important affair. I used to dread and almost fear bathing, as it’d mean stepping out with dehydrated skin almost to the point of splitting open. This is due to regular soaps being too harsh, and stripping the skin of its natural oils and moisture. The result is a dreaded tightness on my already fragile skin, which then leads to dryness and itchiness.

For a truly refreshing shower, I used Suu Balm’s Dual Cooling and Moisturising Cream Body Wash (from $30.90 for 420ml). I could rest easy knowing that the formulation is super safe, containing zero soap and fragrances. It gently yet effectively cleansed the grime from my skin, while nourishing it with ingredients like shea butter and sodium hyaluronate.

You may recognise these ingredients from facial skincare products which aim to boost moisture. If you’re looking for eczema-friendly facial skincare, you’ll be pleased to know that Suu Balm also has a range of eczema care products for the face.

As a result, my post-shower skin didn’t have that usual taut and dried-out feeling I get from using conventional soaps, where it feels like my skin’s moisture levels have been depleted completely. Instead, my skin feels cleansed yet softened and hydrated. The body wash also has menthol, which made me feel extra refreshed.

Is Suu Balm effective for eczema?

Needless to say, the experience will vary across individuals. But personally, using Suu Balm’s moisturiser and body wash over the course of 2 weeks managed to produce visible results.
