About Todai
Tucked away in a quiet corner of basement two at Marina Bay Sands, Todai is an international cuisine, seafood and sushi buffet restaurant with a huge array of offerings. The original Todai was started by two businessmen – a Korean and a Japanese – in California in 1985, and they have been growing steadily ever since. Todai currently has 27 branches worldwide.
The Food
Todai has an impressive selection of food, but upon stepping into the restaurant, chances are that you’ll find yourself automatically gravitating towards the crab section. After you’ve taken in the sight of the mounds and mounds of crab legs piled high, you’ll react instinctively by either
A) Taking out your phone to document the Instagram-worthy sight
B) Reaching for the nearest plate with the intention of transferring the crab display’s entire contents onto your plate, or in most cases
C) Both.
First things first – whilst the regular crab is available daily, the Alaskan king crab is only available on the weekends. Now that you have this piece of information, use it to your advantage and make your decisions wisely.
We had the honour of having the Seafood Platter prepared for us by the chef – this consists of a mouth-watering array of the afore-mentioned king crab, plus oysters – but before you start calling up the restaurant to order this, do note that it’s typically only available during special events such as the Chinese New Year.
The good folks at Todai shared with us that the crab and the oysters are the top two all-time favourites at their restaurant, and rounding off in third place is the LA Galbi (Korean-style marinated beef). Other than this, there’s also a wide array of food available – sushi, which goes without saying, delicious thin-crust pizza, escargots, laksa, a range of salads and a steak bar where the smiling staff carve off slices of steak for you from the gigantic, almost intimidating chunk of meat sitting on the platter.
Rounding off your hearty meal is also drinks (soft drinks, coffee and tea are included in the price of the buffet) as well as dessert. If you still have the room for it, indulge in the sweet cakes, macarons, ice cream and even chocolate fondue available.
The Verdict
Priced at $42++ to $68++ per pax for adults, Todai is definitely not one of the cheaper options when it comes to buffets. But if you’re a fan of seafood and looking to stuff yourself silly with crab and oysters, we would definitely recommend this place.
Being started by a Korean, it also has a high quality Korean and Japanese spread and it has attracted a number of Korean stars.
