An established name among Hanoi’s bakeries is S’Patisserie, a cozy little space with cushioned seats and light background music right next to the busy Hoàn Kiếm Lake. Grab a seat next to the window, and you’’ll get a clear view of the lake and all the busy activities outside – making this a nice place to spend a quiet afternoon with a book, a warm cup of coffee, and a slice of cake.

Starting out as a humble store established by a Japanese baker in 2005, Poeme is now a major brand with 9 outlets all over Hanoi. Over the years, it has become the go-to place for many Hanoians to quench their cake cravings due to its accessibility and quality products.
Cakes here are touted as having only a third of the amount of calories compared to a regular cake, and they’re much cheaper compared to many other bakeries as well, which means you won’t have to feel guilty later when you look at your wallet or your bathroom scale.

There are over 150 cake flavors here to tickle your taste buds, among them the watermelon mousse (VND18,000, ~USD0.77) is also a treat to the eyes as it’s made to resemble an actual watermelon slice with layers of red jelly and tapiocas acting as the watermelon “seeds”.

For those who don’t know, salted egg sponge cake is a well-loved treat among Vietnamese people. With toppings of cheese, salted eggs, and meat floss added on top of a sponge cake, it perfectly combines the creamy, salty, and sweet flavors for a sublime bite.
Today, the dish has become a staple that you can find at pretty much any bakery in Hanoi, but Susi’s Cake’s offerings (VND50,000-VND75,000, ~USD2.16-3.24) are still regarded as one of the best in town. Sponge cakes here are always fresh with a satisfying spongy texture, while the salted eggs are well-seasoned.

Jamứt’s name is a clever play on words that combines “Jam” and “mứt” – which also means “jam” in Vietnamese. Despite its name, though, this bakery established by a Japanese mom is known less for its jams, but more for its lovely cakes made using all-natural ingredients, without any preservatives whatsoever.

Not to be missed here is the ring cake (VND35,000, ~1.51) featuring an outer layer of soft sponge cake encasing a cold cream filling.
You might also want to try the choux cream (VND35,000, ~1.51) here, which are filled – and I mean literally filled – with cream of many flavors ranging from vanilla to chocolate.

Despite being just a humble bakery in a small alley that only sells takeaways, Mia Bakery has garnered a loyal follower base thanks to its quality products.
Bubble tea aficionados should not miss out on the bubble tea cake (VND100,000, ~USD4.32), Mia’s attempt to integrate the trendy beverage into its cakes. Cut into the outer layer of cheese and tapioca toppings to see the beautiful tea-infused lava filling spill out in a gush of mouth-watering aroma.

Alternatively, the Milo cake (VND100,000, ~USD4.32) with its Milo cereal cover is also worth trying.
And while these cakes might sound like a ton of sugar, they are actually not too sweet at all as the ingredients are kept at a balanced ratio.

Yet another hidden gem among Hanoi’s bakeries is Panna Cotta. Tucked away on the second floor of a residential building in an alley, the place is far from spacious with only 2 tables, but it’s kept clean and cutely designed with flower pots that give it a homey feel.
In terms of cakes here, the titular Panna Cotta (VND25,000, ~USD1.08) is of course worth a try with its extremely smooth texture that melts on your tongue.

But we have to give the spotlight to the passion fruit tiramisu. You can get a big one for VND90,000 (~USD3.89), or a smaller, one-person serving for VND35,000 (~USD1.51). In either case, the inner layers’ flavor strikes the perfect balance between the sweetness and bitterness of cocoa and coffee powders, while the sourness of the passion fruit jelly on top serves to complete the taste.
As there is limited space for dine-in at Panna Cotta, most customers opt to order deliveries or takeaways. You can contact the bakery via its telephone number of 0914073866 or its Facebook page to place your order.
