Dabao a yakitori lunch under $10
Overall Score

3.5
I’m always on the hunt for a cheap, hearty meal and when I’m in the mood for Japanese, I make a beeline for the nearest Tori Q for a yakitori set meal.

The takeaway stall offers set meals under $10 that include a generous portion of rice - along with a selection of chicken, pork, unagi, and other yakitori sticks slathered in a rich, savoury sauce.

And with 14 outlets islandwide, there’s little excuse not to spice up your lunch routine and give this skewer stall a try.

Cheapest Yakitori in town
Overall Score

Tori-Q is a mid-range restaurant in Singapore that specialises in Yakitori. It has a few outlets in Singapore and they are all situated in prime locations such as Paragon, Junction 8 and Hougang Mall.

Besides selling Yakitori sticks (eg, chicken, pork, quail eggs) customers have to option of adding rice for $1 as well as adding miso soup. While the bento boxes and food packets are disposable, Tori-Q provides tables and seats for customers to enjoy a quick meal. I love Tori-Q as their food are flavourful and taste pretty authentic.

While the Yakitori they serve is cheaper than those in restaurants and taste only slightly inferior, it is still not cheap. A bento box consisting of only 4 sticks of Yakitori cost at least $5.80. However, if you are simply looking for a quick Japanese meal, this is the place to go as the staff are extremely efficient.

Tori Q's been around for the longest time and they've got outlets everywhere in Singapore. That, I'm thankful for because those fragrant sticks of charred meats often call out to me whenever I'm near a Tori Q outlet. The queue is never-ending but clears fast with those deft fingers behind the panelled glass.

I used to just get a few sticks of skewered meats drenched in flavourful sauces when I'm feeling peckish but recently gave their bento sets a go. These bento sets are surprisingly filling and if you are a fan of seaweed, feel free to request for more - their smiley staff will gladly give you more without charging extra!

These are priced ~$6 so that makes of a reasonably priced meal if you're looking to have your Japanese fast food fix. Oh, I like their chicken balls best out of everything else they have on the menu!

Tori-Q is like Japan's answer to our cries for Asian fast food. Meat skewers dipped into sauce, and then nestled on sticky white rice and drenched with gravy, with a side of sour purple pickles. Yumz. However for me I prefer my rice plain so I ask them to skip the sauce!

I used to avoid the pickles, till I tried it one day with the chicken skewer. It went so well together I finished all the pickles and started looking for more. The sour taste goes well with the slightly charred meaty taste.

It amazes me how they always move super quickly despite how long the queue is, and I've never had a rude server at Tori-Q too :) I feel it's quite reasonably priced at a full meal for

Singaporeans love Japanese food, but it's really hard to find cheap but delicious Japanese food here, especially yakitori. However, Tori-Q is one of my favourite places as the food they sell are really reasonably priced and delicious.

I like how they offer different bento sets, and each set includes a variety of yakitori sticks so that customers can have a taste of different meat in one package. I am attracted to their sauce, which I have failed to find anywhere else. The sauce is very fragrant and flavourful, which compliments the succulent meat.

Also, I like how Tori-Q packs their food into those packaging boxes, which makes it easy for people to eat out of, and also easy for takeaways. Affordable, delicious and convenient.

Bento sets accompanying me
(Updated: October 17, 2012)

Talking about ToriQ will bring me and my friends back to our preparation for 'O' level period. With lessons ending late and canteen stalls closing, or being simply bored of school food, we will usually take a 20 to 30 min bus ride to Tampines Mall for ToriQ. The bento sets were, at that time, stress relieving food and rewards for ourselves for all the mugging throughout the week. As we have lessons back in school in the evening, we will take away the bento sets and savour in the delicious meat balls at either the open space garden at Tampines 1 (opposite Tampines Mall) or just back in school. Miraculously, we could eat the sets week after week and not be sick of it. (Well, they have a variety of sticks to choose from!)

I like their purple ginger the most as the sweet and sour taste, or rather, the unique taste goes best with their slightly sticky rice. Thinking about it makes me drool... The sticks and bento sets are sold at reasonably affordable price even for students. The staffs were friendly and recommend their best-selling sticks which never fail to satisfy our taste buds.

The only thing I can complain about is the high calories of the slightly oily sauce. It is quite unhealthy to eat is on regular basis for someone who doesn't exercise regularly. Luckily for us, we are sporty people which enable us to eat abit more with lesser guilt.
Do remember to drink lots of water to replenish all the water loss as well since the sticks can get a little too salty for good.

Tori Q is one of my favorite snack stalls to visit when I'm feeling peckish. The sticks of chicken, meatballs or vegetables are affordably priced around $1-$2. My favorite would be the meatball stick which has 3 meatballs drenched in the yummy savory sauce that goes so well together. My mother often buys the bento set home for my dinner when she has no time to cook. Upon microwaving it, the meat is still tender after a few hour.

The stall assistants can be a bit curt at times as it can get busy. Most of the times I'm served quickly but without a smile or friendly words.

Some of the outlets have seats where you can sit down and enjoy your food. But if you want to eat it on the go, its easy to eat as they give the stick to you in a plastic bag. Be careful though, the stick is often stained with the sauce so your fingers might get dirty. Or you can do as I do, lick the yummy sauce right off your fingers!

Still remember when Tori-Q first came into Singapore where their YakiTori are so well received by the locals! It's just like the local favourite- Satay! Just that the YakiTori are dipped in Teriyaki sauce instead of satay sauce. You can have the choice of Chicken or Pork for your favourite Yakitori!

Best of all, you have to try their bento sets whereby you can mix the chicken and pork sticks together with rice, with the fragrance of teriyaki suace and seaweed, it will the a delicious meal for you! Also it is much more cheaper to buy the bento set rather than the Yakitori sticks separately.

Because the Yakitori sticks costs $1.20-$1.80 each which the set only cost $5-$7, it's definitely more filling and worthwhile.

Yummy takeaway

I have always liked Tori Q's yakitori. It costs about a dollar a stick which is still alright, and it always tastes good. Tori Q has not disappointed me so far. One of my favourites has got to be their teriyaki chicken yakitori; the meat is juicy and succulent, and the teriyaki sauce is just awesome. They are never too stingy with the sauce as well! It is therefore no wonder that there is often a queue at Tori Q. While it does little to fill up your stomach, it still serves as a good delicious snack when you go shopping at Bugis.

affordable bento sets
(Updated: June 08, 2012)
Overall Score

3.5
For a simple fare of Japanese yakitoris, Tori Q will be a good place to have a fast meal at.

They serve bento sets and customers are able to customize their own as well. Since I do not really like the fixed sets and prefer making my own, I will usually get pork with asparagus and tontoro pork, and chicken and chicken ball at times, with rice. The Japanese rice is soft, chewy and tasty. It can be eaten on its own with just the sauce and the seaweed. The pork items taste better than the chicken ones, although the meat is generally soft. I like the pork with asparagus best, and will get one to eat on its own sometimes.

The items that I prefer are considered the more expensive ones and there are cheaper alternatives, like just the chicken or pork. The queues at Tori Q generally move quite fast, despite a long queue at times, as there are many people working to cook and serve the food.
