Mecha Yakitori

I remember when I was a kid, I would stand outside Tori Q and stare at their Yakitori making machine. My favourite part was when the Yakitori gets dipped into machine’s sauce pool, and comes out of its shower glistening in their spotlights.

Food made by machine can taste as good as handmade ones and Tori Q proves it. By standardizing the heating and cooking times, Tori Q can ensure that their yakitori are cook just right. It brings down the price too!

Tori Q has a good many branches all over Singapore - heartland malls, city malls, you name it. Their branches are always distinctly identifiable through the smell of their yakitori cooking and their open kitchen concept which facilitates the wafting of their food's smell. A good marketing strategy indeed.

When it comes to the yakitori itself, it doesn't disappoint, but I wouldn't go as far as to call it 'good' yakitori. There are plenty of izakaya restaurants in Singapore that offer better quality skewers (albeit at higher prices). However, you get what you pay for here - at just over $1 for most skewers, the flavour of the meat in whatever skewer you order is rich. The texture - less so.

My personal favorite are their Chicken Balls, which I find to be rather unique to them as not many other places offer skewered chicken balls (particularly those which taste as good as the ones here). At an affordable $1.40, I'd recommend a try.

They also offer bento sets, which can serve as surprisingly filling lunches. A generous set would set (pun intended) you back around $6, though you do have to go through the trouble of pulling the meat of the skewers yourself. There are certainly more affordable or value for money options but I suppose if you have a craving for Japanese Skewered Meat (in, or out of bento sets), Tori Q is the place for you to go.

I remember having Tori Q a lot when I was young, but I guess as I grew older I started to get a lot more picky of my food. I remember I used to like the food there a lot, but slowly, over time, the food prepared at Tori Q started to get disappointing. The rice is often soggy, the gravvy they put over it is cold and it gives a bad after-taste because of that.

As most of the skewers are cooked way before it's sold to the customer, it's cold too. It's still a better and perhaps healthier option as compared to fast food, but I really wish Tori Q stepped up it's efforts in making its food tastier. The pricing is reasonable for the quality and taste. I'd still get my lunch/dinner from them, but not as much.

Tori Q is a japanese food outlet that sells a variety of meat sticks, ranging from ebi, to chicken, to pork. There are grilled and fried options available. With a low price of each sticks, it is definitely very affordable to purchase one and chew to satisfy the cravings of people.

Tori Q also offers combo that comes with rice added with seaweed for their customers at a price of $5-$7 which is highly affordable for all. The rice with seaweed tastes very nice especially with the Tori sauce and the grilled meat that is available in the combo.

At some outlets, there are also seats available for people to dine in instead of just merely takeaways. However, they still use paper boxes and disposable chopsticks and spoons even for customers who are dining there, which is very not environmental friendly.

I personally like the chicken ball best because of its tenderness and unique taste and you are give three balls in one stick, which is probably the most worth it among all the other food.
