It’s the time of the year again – where Singaporeans flee their sunny island for a snowy year-end vacay. Doesn’t matter if you are trekking the snow-capped Mount Fuji or chasing the aurora borealis in Iceland, there are winter apparel shops in Singapore where you can stock up on your gear before that trip.

At 10°C-15°C, you’d feel a chill that’s quite bearable. You’ll want to layer up, so that it’s easy to remove layers, especially if you’ll be spending considerable time in the sun. Start with a long-sleeved t-shirt and sweater, then for extra warmth, go for a lightweight fleece hoodie, or bomber or leather jacket. If your body runs warm, opt for a short-sleeved t-shirt. Jeans or pants, and sneakers would suffice.
In the single digits, you’ll want to pick insulating fabrics like cashmere or wool. Wear these closest to your body so it can retain body warmth. Layer on a sweater, then, keep your neck and chest warm with a turtleneck sweater or bring along a scarf. At this temperature, the cold air can make it difficult to breathe and may trigger asthmatic reactions in some. Bundle up in a puffer jacket to really feel cosy and warm. Swop sneakers for boots as well, so your feet stay toasty in the cold.
Those who are more sensitive to the cold should put on thermal leggings under your jeans or pants. Wool or cashmere socks and gloves are also recommended.
At sub-zero temperatures, it all comes down to the materials you’re picking for your winter wear. Anything with a fleece, wool, cashmere, or down lining would help insulate heat better. You can follow the guide above and add on more layers to suit how you’re feeling.
For outerwear, go for something that’s waterproof. Don’t forget that snow will melt once you’re indoors, and that water can seep into your other layers. That’ll freeze into ice when you head back outside. Even if it doesn’t freeze, the feeling of wet clothes in winter is unpleasant and chilling.
You’ll also want to minimise exposure of your skin to the harsh weather. This means covering up your head with a wool beanie, popping on earmuffs, wrapping your neck in a scarf, wearing gloves, and putting on thick socks that go past your ankles. The less your skin is exposed, the less body heat will escape.
From parkas and fleece jackets to scarves and long johns, you can easily snap up a wide array of winter necessities at Winter Time. Being extremely heavy-duty, they are useful to help weather sub-zero temperatures.
Down parkas are going at $209 on their online store, with regular promotions rolled out from time to time, where items can go at massive discounts at up to 80% off. For better variety, you would want to check out their brick and mortar stores instead of shopping online.

Better known for being a sportswear emporium, Decathlon is also a place to scout for coats and gloves. Their items may fall a little short on the aesthetics but if you have experienced winter before, you’ll know where your priorities lie. Plus, it helps that all of these come at a serious bargain.
Ski jackets can cost as low as $69.90, and gloves from $4.90. You can also get hiking and camping gear here. Do note that their coats mostly appear to be made of synthetic materials, which means that they are probably alright for a trip to Taiwan or Hong Kong, but may not be able to bear harsher New York winters. However, they do have a few down coats and inner thermal wear options too.
