From shopping at affordable JB supermarkets to exploring new things to do in JB, us Singaporeans are always finding new reasons to visit Malaysia. With JB becoming a popular destination, it’s no surprise that many hobbyists are starting to travel there for alternate shopping options too.
If one of your hobbies happens to be reading, you’re in luck as Japan’s largest bookstore chain, Tsutaya Books, is opening its first outlet in AEON Mall Tebrau City in JB on 15th November 2024.

Being the 3rd and latest addition to the existing outlets in KL, Tsutaya Bookstore AEON Mall Tebrau City aims to bring its lifestyle concept to book lovers in JB. Unlike the bookstores we are familiar with like Kinokuniya and POPULAR, this Japanese bookstore provides an immersive reading experience with its many seats, study desks, and benches.
With a wide selection of books especially in the humanities and sociology genres, you’ll be able to find fiction books, graphic novels, and manga here. For the uninitiated, this bookstore arranges its books based on similar topics or movies, doing away with the traditional arrangements of books according to language or genre.

What this means is that in the movie section, you might spot the autobiography of J.K. Rowling right beside a row of Harry Potter novels, and even international magazines that have covered the movie. This encourages you to discover what your interests are, while admiring the aesthetic architecture of the store.
As part of the opening promotion on 15th November, Tsutaya will be conducting workshops and the first 100 customers who purchase a book will get goodie bags containing a free Lelierre bookmark, as well as lemonade for those who spend more than RM150 (⁓S$45.27).

Based on what we’ve seen in Japan’s outlets and the 2 outlets in Malaysia, we anticipate that this store will also have stationery, arts and craft items, and aesthetic home decor, other than huge bookshelves filled with popular titles.
You’ll be able to find book accessories and stationery such as fountain pens and minimalist notebooks, as well as craft materials like washi tape kits.

If you’re looking to spice up your home decor, the bookstore sells hand-made kitchenware such as ceramic cups, bowls, and even terrarium pieces. There’s also a children’s section where you’ll find toys, board games and even limited-edition figurines.

As the Christmas season is approaching, those searching for last-minute gifts will be delighted to know that there are in-house gift wrapping services available, so you don’t have to look up a wrapping tutorial.

One of the main highlights of this bookstore that separates it from other bookstores is its cafe. It’s a chic contemporary cafe that gives off a zen aesthetic, providing plush cushioned seats and dining tables.

The menu offers freshly brewed drip coffee, yuzu ice-blended drinks, matcha espresso latte, as well as dessert options like matcha cakes and strawberry cakes. This cafe is an ideal spot for those looking to take a rest from reading or looking to have a study session.
