Considered the oldest pagoda in the world, the immense 99 m high Shwedagon Pagoda dominates the skyline of Yangon. Enshrined within are 4 sacred relics. The Shwedagon Pagoda is covered in actual gold, donated by the Myanmar people through the ages, and is considered the most important pilgrimage place in the country.

2. Kandawgyi Lake

Despite being a man-made lake, the Kandawgyi Lake is popular for its scenic surroundings of the Kandawgyi Nature Park. As one of 2 major lakes in Yangon, the Kandawgyi Lake also houses the famous Karaweik / Karaweik Hall, designed in the shape of a traditional royal Myanmar boat.

3. Maha Bandula Park

The Maha Bandula Park in downtown Yangon is a peaceful and scenic garden, lined with many roses, offering a good view of the city. Located within the Maha Bandula Park is the Independence Monument Obelisk, which commemorates Myanmar independence. Next to Maha Bandula Park are several iconic buildings, including the Sule Pagoda and Yangon City Hall.

4. Bogyoke Aung San Museum

The Bogyoke Aung San Museum in Yangon is dedicated to the memory of General Aung San, the founder of modern Myanmar. Listed as a heritage site in the city, the Bogyoke Aung San Museum contains a collection of memorabilia of his life, including books, photographs, clothing, furniture, and even his car.

5. Yangon Zoological Gardens

The Yangon Zoological Gardens has a good range of flora and fauna, with over 200 species of animals and birds, over 300 species of plants, and an aquarium. Within the Yangon Zoological Gardens is the Myanmar Museum Of Natural History, with a taxidermy display of rare indigenous animals.
