As the economic, cultural and political centre of Russia for centuries, Moscow holds an important role in history. Named for the the Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, Moscow is one of the 5 most heavily populated cities in the world, as well as one of the top 5 most expensive cities to live in. All around Moscow are reminders of its Imperial and Soviet past, and its architecture is some of the most unique in the world.

Here are the Top 5 Tourist Attractions to visit in Moscow, all of which hold important cultural or historical significance. All these are permanent locations which can be visited and viewed at any time throughout the year.

1. Red Square, Kremlin, Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Literally located at the Center Of Moscow, as indicated by the marking on the ground which is also a tourist attraction, the famous Red Square is home to several attractions. Within Red Square is the political fortress of Russia, the Kremlin Complex, with the famous Spasskaya tower; the iconic and elaborately domed Saint Basil’s Cathedral and Monument To Minin And Pozharsky; Lenin’s Mausoleum, the resting place of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, the founder of the Soviet Union; the State Historical Museum, which traces the development of Russia over the centuries; and Kazan Cathedral.

There are 2 Tretyakov Gallery within Moscow. The classic Tretyakov Gallery houses over 130,000 works of Russia fine art in 62 galleries, and is considered one of the greatest art museums in the world. The newer Tretyakov Gallery focuses on contemporary Russia art, and nearby is located the Fallen Monument Park / Sculpture Park which has many statues from the Soviet Union era in Moscow.

Gorky Park is one of the most popular public spaces in Moscow, and formerly used to be the site of an amusement park. Today, Gorky Park hosts contemporary public art projects and design fairs, various sporting and recreational activities from tennis, to yoga, to beach volleyball, to bungee jumping, to dancing taught by instructors, and even a Russia ice rink for skating or ice hockey. A new amusement park has been constructed, where you can rent boats to row in the lake, or horses for riding. The popularity of Gorky Park has seen it enter into Russia pop culture, and the place is referenced is many songs and books.

4. Ice Sculpture Gallery

The Russia Ice Sculpture Gallery or Russian Gallery Of Ice Sculpture is a permanent, year-round exhibit in Moscow which is housed in a temperature controlled sub-zero environment. The exhibits in Ice Sculpture Gallery change bi-annually, and are enhanced by colourful lights and mood music. Created by award-winning international Russia sculptures using over 90 tons of ice, there is no other attraction in the world of this sort like the Ice Sculpture Gallery.

5. Kolomenskoye

Kolomenskoye is the picturesque former Russia royal estate, located south-east of Moscow on the Kolomna road. Kolomenskoye has several man-made and natural attractions, including the Ascension Church, the reconstructed Great Palace, the house of Tsar Peter The Great, the oldest Oak Tree Grove in Moscow, the scenic Moskva River, and the Golosov Ravine with its shrine and sacred stones.
