So you’ve been to Esplanade no less than 1,000 times, ravaged the food stalls at Makansutra Gluttons Bay, and helped busloads of tourists take photos with the Merlion. But you’ve not stepped foot inside the durian just yet.
Well, guess what: you’re missing out on a whole lot of free shows and cool tours. Plus, from now till 31st December 2022, you can get up to a $20 discount at Esplanade mall.
IYKYK, but if you don’t, then here’s some news for you: most shows and exhibitions at the durian theatre are free.

The lineup of free performances is a part of its monthly programme Soundtracks which runs till the end of November, so catch them before they’re gone. There’s Nyoombaku gracing you with your fave anime hits and Frission who will be belting out a capella tracks from Nickelodeon and NBC TV shows.

Those who’d like to know what goes on behind the huge curtains can sign up for a backstage tour (from $35). Check out the dressing room, go under the stage, and unearth juicy behind-the-scenes tidbits. There’s also a kid-friendly Garden Tour for children between 9 and 12 years old to explore the plants and trees at the Forecourt Garden.

There’s also When Stars Align, a series of horoscope-inspired tours that’s designed to match your vibes. Each tour comes with a photography course, reusable shopping bag painting, and even a vocal training session.
History buffs who’d like to learn a thing or two about Singapore’s live music scene can opt for the Home Groove exhibition. Or, sign up for the Lights On tour if you want to take a deep dive into the history of the durian theatre.
After hours of shows and tours, your tummy might be rumbling and you may turn to your trusty neighbourhood food court or a bag of hot cheetos. While there’s nothing wrong with that, we suggest you consider the restaurants inside Esplanade Mall that are offering up to $20 off your total bill.
From now till 30th November, spend at least $40 at either Alter Ego, Gloria Jean’s Coffees, Old School Delights, Symphony Cafe Lounge, Red House Seafood, or Harry’s to redeem the deal. Just make sure you check out via Esplanade Mall Online.
If you’re into performing arts, music, and dance shows, the durian theatre is probably the best place to take it all in.
However, if all you want to do is eat your way through multiple cafes, the adjacent mall is where you can do just that. There’s also an indoor gym with a rock climbing wall called Project Send, a vinyl record store named The Analog Vault, and a rooftop terrace if you wish to hang out outdoors.
Those looking for something new and free to do this weekend and beyond, we’ll see you here.
