For many years, Tanjong Katong Complex has been an icon of Geylang Serai. Its iconic angled facade and 4 cylindrical corners housed a labyrinthine space that played host to Singapore’s Malay community as a gathering space and a shopping mall. And now finally, it’s set to join the ranks of PLQ Mall and Paya Lebar Square in the 21st century with a facelift.
The Singapore Land Authority awarded Jun Jie Development the tender for Tanjong Katong Complex’s renovation following their bid of $90,000,888. And while the mall’s transformation is expected to be completed by 2029, the developers have plans to start reopening the mall in phases from as early as mid-2026.

What is arguably the biggest change to the new Tanjong Katong Complex is the addition of a multipurpose rooftop deck along a “community spine”, a new thoroughfare that connects the mall’s retail, communal, and green offerings. This brings the total footprint of the mall from 19,000sqm to a whopping 30,166sqm.
The communal space atop the 5-storey-tall annexe is designed to host social gatherings, wellness activities, and other small events like markets and cultural showcases too. There will also be a food garden here so that you can makan with a view over the neighbourhood.
When the new Tanjong Katong Complex is completed, it will also be the new home for the Geylang East Public Library, which currently sits at Geylang East Ave 1, which is about 600m away from Paya Lebar Station.
This move will make it closer to all the transit options within the district, so you don’t have to walk as far just to find a quiet corner to read. It’ll also be much more convenient to grab a mid-day snack in between mugging sessions since it’ll now be located within the mall.
It will also be a pretty sizeable space, with around 2,400sqm of floor space dedicated to the library.
Mention Tanjong Katong Complex, and the visuals are instantly recognisable: slanted vertical columns, louvre panels, and the cylindrical towers that anchor each corner. Thankfully, Jun Jie Development’s plans include the reuse of Tanjong Katong Complex’s iconic facade and structural elements, ensuring that the mall’s signature look remains familiar even as its interiors get a modern lift.
Based on the early renders, the revamped exterior takes on a warm, golden hue, a fresh coat that still pays homage to its roots while standing out among the sleek, neutral-toned malls of today.
Beyond the structural changes, the new Tanjong Katong Complex will also be home to a variety of community initiatives. 3,600sqm will be reserved for the Yayasan Mendaki headquarters and a MUIS office, while 1,500sqm will be dedicated to Malay cultural trades and entrepreneurial incubation spaces, underscoring the mall’s importance as a cultural anchor for the Malay community.
When the Tanjong Katong Complex finally reopens after its renovation, you can bet that we’ll be there to give you all a first look. 2029 can’t come soon enough.
