We’re all used to new year resolutions like “start exercising” and “read more books”, but if you don’t do basic and are looking to up your art-appreciation quota for 2019, here’s one event you should mark out in your planners.
From the 24th-27th of January, S.E.A Focus, an all-new boutique art fair, is making Gillman Barracks its home and bringing you the best of Southeast Asian art from the quirky, pastel-centric work of Yeo Kaa to artistic takes on your favourite cartoons.
Here’s what to look out for:
You’ll also get to snap some sick shots for the ‘gram at Yeo Kaa’s “Alone But Not Lonely” installation.

It doesn’t matter if you’re an art enthusiast or just someone out to soak in new experiences, S.E.A Focus’ showcase of regional and local art is sure to intrigue you. From fusion pieces to larger-than-life installations, ready your cameras for a day of documentation and art immersion.

Also, make sure to grab this rare opportunity to interact with some of the emerging personalities in the regional art scene such as Faris Nakamura and Priyageetha Dia, the lady behind the “golden staircase” in Jalan Rajah.

If you’re a total noob when it comes to artsy fartsy stuff but want to learn more, sign yourself up for one of S.E.A Focus’ customised tours. Knowledgeable guides from Friends of the Museum will walk you through the art fair while they highlight their personal favourites.

Even if English isn’t your strong suit, the students from NAFA have got your back! They’ll be providing bilingual tours of the key sections of the event in Bahasa or Mandarin together with English.

We all know Singaporeans can’t do an Art Fair without food. That’s why S.E.A Focus has set up “The Village” with gourmet hot dogs from Fung Kee Hotdogs, artisanal coffee from Papa Palheta as well as bespoke cocktails from Proof & Company to satisfy our needs.
If that’s not enough, Gillman Barracks also offers its own range of food and beverages such as fresh seafood from The Naked Finn, handcrafted ice cream from Creamier and many more.

To all the hard workers who need to OT, don’t worry! Gillman Barracks’ night-time Open House Event, Art After Dark, will return on 25th January 2019 as part of Singapore Art Week (SAW) so that you don’t miss out on all the partying.
Speaking of night-time events and celebration, party lovers can look forward to live performances by Mediacorp Radio 987FM’s Vandetta; Hip-hop Artist, MAS1A; and Music Producer, Intriguant.
To end S.E.A. Focus on a lively note, homegrown party collective, Ice Cream Sundays, will be hosting a party on the boutique art fair’s last day, 27th January from 2PM – 10PM so make sure to be there!
If you’re looking to up your Instagram game despite not knowing much about art, give S.E.A Focus a shot. There’s good art, good food, and even good music — what’s not to love?
