You could say that June has been great to both art lovers and IG bellwethers alike. Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen everything from the Off/On Exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore, to i Light Singapore. I mean, on top of all that, David Beckham was in town. Have we also mentioned Pink Dot?
With all the hubbub, it’s no surprise that some quieter exhibitions have received less fanfare. Still, you won’t want to miss out on Superfluous Things: Paper and Lonely Vectors – 2 limited-time exhibits that have inconspicuously opened at the Singapore Art Museum at Tanjong Pagar Distripark.

While technology seems to have taken over the world, there’s always a special place in our hearts for the good ol’ reliable medium of paper. That’s the premise of Superfluous Things: Paper, featuring 5 artworks by 9 contemporary artists.
We’re not talking just the paper cranes the lot of us used to fold in school. To see the extent to which creativity on paper can be stretched, swing by these new kids on the block, for fresh installations to ponder over with boo.

Find Land of Fairy Tales, a colourful central piece of art by Chinese artist Li Hongbo, that reimagines a map of the world in colourful swirls of borders and boundaries. Take a closer look at the abstract work and you’ll notice that each layer of paper had been painstakingly attached one at a time.

Bigger is usually better and we love our “larger-than-life” exhibits, no doubt. But sometimes it’s all about the little things. At Just a Little at a Time by paper sculptor Cheryl Teo, peep 80 tiny artworks smaller than our hands depicting scenes from the mundane to the wacky.

Other artworks include Joli Jolan, Eccentric City, and 100ish Meaningless Statements, all of which have sustainability in mind, with up to 80% of materials being paper-based.
Additional workshops are still available for sign-ups including a paper sculpting class, My Dream Matchbox Home, that’s available on 26th June and 17th July 2022.

After you’re done with checking out Superfluous Things: Paper, wander the museum to find Lonely Vectors. The multi-sited exhibition is on its final run at SAM Tanjong Pagar Distripark with 8 quirky installations chosen just for the location.
