Rabbit Hole by Pangdemonium! Review

Rabbit Hole Review by Averlynn Lim

Rabbit Hole is a 2hour 15min long play with a 15 minute intermission. It stars Adrian Pang as the husband Howie, Janice Koh as the wife Becca, Seong Hui Xuan as sister Izzy, Lok Meng Chue as mom Nat and Eden Ang as Jason the teenage driver. The auditorium set was beautifully decorated, with a view of Danny’s room (Howie’s and Janice’s late son) the kitchen and the living room. The story follows the lives of couple Howie and Becca and how they cope in the aftermath of their son’s tragic death in a car accident. Their transition through the different stages of grief is shared with the audience through daily conversations within the family that spark emotions of anger and exasperation to joy and comfort. The brilliant script writing ensures lots of laughter and at times makes you forget we’re dealing with such tragic subject matter.

Even though I’m not a parent yet, I could feel the torment, grief, turmoil and emotional rollercoaster the family was going through, having to cope with their second death in their family. They bring to the audience the difficulty of having to live with the death of a close kin forever, which really makes you appreciate and treasure your loved ones more.

On dealing with the loss: “At some point it becomes bearable. It turns into something you can crawl out from under and carry around. Like a brick in your pocket. And you forget it every once in a while. But then you reach in for whatever reason and there it is.

The play was so heart rending yet hilarious at the same time, with superb performances from Adrian Pang, Janice Koh and the cast of Pangdemonium. The intensity of the performances speckled with tears, joy and laughter will leave you with an unforgettable theater experience.
