About InterContinental Bangkok
We’ve all heard of the chain of InterContinental Hotels and their exquisite luxury, so I was stoked when I heard that I was going to get to stay at this hotel. Being someone who usually travels on a budget, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a hotel of such high standards, but now I know and I have to say that it is nothing short of stellar.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by friendly hotel staff and the check-in was done smoothly. Their staff are friendly and approachable and the hotel itself exudes a spacious and classy vibe. They had initially assigned us a room with a Queen-sized bed, but when we requested for it to be changed to twin beds instead, they arranged another room for us promptly.
Facilities at InterContinental Bangkok
I never thought hotel facilities were very important. After all, when we travel we want to explore the country, not the hotel. But staying at the InterContinental changed my mind about that. After long hours of walking, shopping and eating, I found that some of the facilities at the hotel really helped me to unwind and relax before going to sleep.
Arrival
When we arrived, we were given vouchers for a complimentary non-alcoholic beverage of our choice at the Balcony Lounge, which has a really nice ambience. It’s got a simple yet timeless look which made me feel like an important business person, haha!
They have an adequate selection of drinks and snacks, and they have afternoon tea and live piano from 3PM to 8PM daily. The drinks and snacks served here totally deserve a square on your Instagram feed. This is a great place to sit back and relax with some friends for a drink, or have a semi-formal business discussion.
Pool
Hot white boy not included, unfortunately. (But we can always make friends, right?)
The first thing I noticed about the pool was that it was pretty small – it’s not suitable for those of you who swim seriously. But for the rest of us who just want to float around in the pool to mock the ridiculously hot weather in Bangkok, this pool is great. I mean, you could be on the opposite end of the pool and still have a good view of any eyecandy.Besides lounge chairs randomly scattered around the pool, there is a little hut by the side of the pool. There, you can order drinks or something to chew on.
Gym
On the 36th floor of the hotel, there is a cosy little gym for all you people who can’t afford to skip your daily workout! I’m not one of those people, but I popped by the gym anyway.
The first thing I noticed was the refreshment area. When you walk in, you’ll see neatly stacked face towels for you to pick up, as well as headphone covers so we don’t dirty their headphones with our sweat. In front of it is a refreshment corner where you can have a drink and cool down after your workout. The gym equipment is pretty standard. They have weight stations, treadmills and other machines you’ll typically see in gyms. They also have quite a few personal trainers inside, so you can approach them if you need any help.
A really nice plus to the gym is their activity room, where they frequently have classes, such as yoga and pilates, scheduled that you can sign up for – free of charge for in-house guests. If you have time/energy to spare in Bangkok, you could just learn something new here!
Spa InterContinental
Located on the 36th floor and open from 9AM – 11PM daily, Spa InterContinental is somewhere you can rest, rejuvenate, and recharge after an exhausting day of exploration.
Spa services at Spa InterContinental Bangkok have received stellar reviews, but they are chargeable and aren’t cheap. Click here for a list of Spa Packages and their prices.
Rooms at Intercontinental Bangkok
When we checked in, we were given a note and a card to welcome us to InterContinental Bangkok, which was a nice touch. By the way, the table that these notes are on has a letter-writing kit on it. It has envelopes, paper, a pen, and postcards. Neat.Inside the room, there were complimentary fruits.
Room
The most important part of a hotel room is its beds. And when I jumped into these Sealy Posturepedic beds, I’m not exaggerating when I say I sank into a soft bubble of bliss. They were soooo comfortable and if I could I would have hidden the mattress in my suitcase and lugged it back to Singapore where we would be in love forevermore.
Storage
Our corner room was such that when you open the door, you’re greeted by a corridor of wardrobes and a mini-bar right at the end. To the left of the mini-bar was the bathroom, and to the right was the bedroom.
The first thing I explored was the wardrobe. It is huge and there is a lot of space for your stuff, but I personally found that unnecessary. But different people have different needs. If you need a lot of closet space, you’ll appreciate what they have. Inside the wardrobe were 2 pairs of soft bedroom slippers.
Mini-bar
Located at the end of the wardrobe corridor into the room is a little counter full of little treats. In one of the drawers, we found several bottles of different kinds of liquor, along with snacks to complement them.
In the drawer next to this one was a black bag labeled “IT accessories”, and within it was a tangle of wires whose use I don’t know, but might come in handy to you if you’re one of those who regularly brings a ton of gadgets whenever you travel.
Beneath these drawers is a mini-fridge that’s stocked with sparkling water, soda and cans of beer. If you’d rather have a warm beverage, they’ve got you covered too. They have standard coffee and tea making facilities, but a good selection as far as in-room coffee/tea selections go.
Toilet
When we walked in, the toilet was dry, everything was in place, the design is clean and, like everything else about the hotel, classy. Something I liked about this bathroom is the little shaving mirror they have on the left wall of the sink area. You can see its reflection if you look at the right pane mirror.Okay, now let’s focus on their shower for a while. It’s got a detachable shower head and a rain shower feature. And if you don’t want to stand, you can take a soak in the bathtub. You’re spoiled for choice.I loved the toiletries they provided. The best thing was probably the Colgate toothpaste. THANK YOU InterContinental for not giving me weird and gross-tasting toothpaste and providing me with proper toothpaste. It makes a huge difference!
They also provide 2 bottles of drinking water, which I thought was strange, but we were informed that it was for us to brush our teeth with because tap water in Thailand isn’t drinkable.
Food
There are many restaurants at InterContinental Hotel Bangkok to suit your palate, whether you’re looking for something Asian or European.
- Espresso
Serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s a buffet that offers all sorts of dishes including French, Mediterranean, Thai, Chinese and Japanese. They also serve a seafood buffet with sparkling wine every weekend! Be spoiled for choice my friends.
- Fireplace Grill
At Fireplace Grill, they take pride in their 40 years of satisfying even the most discerning of palates in an ultra posh fine dining environment. They serve lunch and dinner and also have two branded private rooms if you require the privacy.
- Summer Palace
As its name suggests, it is a Chinese restaurant that touts itself to be the most authentic Cantonese special occasion dining experience in Bangkok. They serve lunch and dinner.
- The Deli
This is a cafe that will make you feel like you’ve just walked into a cosy little place in Europe. They offer a wide selection of pastries including cakes, quiches and sandwiches. Also, be sure to try their specialty teas and coffees while you’re there! They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Grossi Trattoria and Wine Bar
When I descended the stairs into this Italian restaurant, I didn’t feel at all out of place. While maintaining InterContinental’s clean and classy style, this place has a welcoming and open vibe. InterContinental partnered with Guy Grossi, an Australian restaurateur and celebrity chef, to produce the Gross Trattoria & Wine Bar. It boasts unique trattoria style Italian dining and a great variety of Italian wine, and is the first internationally branded Italian restaurant in Bangkok.
Serves: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Balcony Lounge and Humidor Cigar Bar
We’ve talked about the Balcony Lounge, but wait, there’s more. Other than alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, they have a humidor for all the cigar lovers out there.
The Humidor feels even more exclusive, because it’s a small space that’s closed off to the rest of the Balcony Lounge, but when I stepped in, I was struck by the fanciness of the place, but I quickly retreated because of the smell of smoke. It touts itself as Bangkok’s best cigar bar.
Breakfast
Breakfast is very important because it determines how the rest of your day will go. Seriously. Don’t know about you, but a bad breakfast just spoils my entire day. We had our complementary breakfast at the Balcony Lounge. There was a really big variety of food to choose from. Whether you want pancakes or bacon or an omelette or maybe potato? They’ve got it all. As far as taste goes, I don’t have anything to complain about. I only took the types of food that I actually like to eat so maybe I’m biased, but I enjoyed breakfast here. My day went really well after that breakfast.
An alternative to Intercontinental Bangkok
If you’re looking for something more wallet friendly, you could check out Intercontinental’s sister hotel, Holiday Inn. The rooms here are priced more affordably. We also stayed at Holiday Inn Express Sukhumvit, which recently opened, and they have special opening rates from only THB 1,699++ (~S$72.06++). Plus, they aren’t miserly on comfort. The facilities here are far more basic, with only a small breakfast selection in the morning, but they’ll provide you with all the basic essentials – toiletries, a clean room, password protected safes, a WI-FI connection and comfortable sheets.
Enjoy Bangkok with InterContinental
Now that I’ve given you an honest rundown on InterContinental Bangkok, it’s up to you to decide if its what you’re looking for in a hotel. I think it’s extremely comfortable, and I loved breakfast, plus the Internet connection was strong and their facilities are great, so I really enjoyed my stay with them.
That being said, if all you’re looking for is a comfortable bed to sleep in at night, then staying here may not be ideal for you, and you may want to check out Holiday Inn instead.
