Rida Video Centre closing down sale
In a time when everything is just a click away, old-school shops here have slowly faded into memory over the years. We’ve previously covered one of the last few holdouts, South Win Laser, where the owner is determined to keep selling CDs and DVDs for as long as he possibly can. But not all stories get that ending.
Over at Bukit Timah, Rida Video Centre – one of the last remaining video rental shops in Singapore – will be closing its doors in April 2026. Before it’s gone for good, there’s a small window to swing by to snag some final discounts and show a little love to the place and its owner.

Tucked away on Level 2 of Coronation Plaza, Rida Video Centre’s storefront is hard to miss, with its entire exterior plastered in movie posters. And right in the middle, the bright red “Rida Video Centre” sign stands proudly, complete with the year it was founded. Laurel Khoo is the owner of the store, and she has been running it for 41 years since 1985.

Step inside and you’ll find shelves lining the shop from wall to wall, stacked to the brim with DVDs spanning decades and genres. There’s everything from Disney favourites like Frozen 2 to classic Asian films featuring icons like Tony Leung and Andy Lau.
Closing down after 41 years
Sadly, after 4 decades in the business, Rida Video Centre will be closing its doors for good on 30th April 2026.
In an Instagram post shared by the owner’s daughter, she revealed that “nothing major happened”, with the closure instead due to the inevitable decline brought on by the digital age. As we already know, video streaming platforms may have made things more convenient, but they have also gradually edged out places like this.

The news of its imminent closure struck a chord with many as well – an announcement post on Rida Video Centre’s Instagram page had comments from longtime customers reminiscing about family movie nights, with some calling the shop a “legendary spot” they grew up with. Others expressed their gratitude, thanking the shop and its owner for keeping physical media alive for as long as they did.

As Rida Video Centre prepares to close its doors, it leaves behind decades of memories, from spontaneous movie picks to family nights spent huddled around the TV.
