Patient 91, The Most Critically Ill Patient COVID-19 In Vietnam, Can Now Sit Up And Move His Legs

COVID-19 in Vietnam, update on 9th June

Since our last update on the COVID-19 situation in Vietnam yesterday, the country has reported one additional COVID-19 case and 3 more recoveries. With the latest numbers, the total patient count in Vietnam is currently 332, with total recoveries sitting at 316.

Of the remaining 16 active patients, Patient 91 continues to be the most critical case. However, he is now able to sit up after two months of being bedridden.

The latest COVID-19 case confirmed in Vietnam is reported yesterday evening to be an 18-year-old man from the southern province of Đồng Tháp. He returned from Cambodia by land on 25th May, was quarantined on arrival, and tested negative at the time.

His second test last Sunday, however, came back positive. As a result, he’ll continue to remain in quarantine for treatment.

In addition to the 6 patients discharged from the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases in Hanoi, which we reported on yesterday, 3 others who were receiving treatment at other medical facilities were also declared free of the virus yesterday, bringing the total recovery count in Vietnam to 316.

The most notable of these 3 is a 37-year-old British man who entered Vietnam on 28th April and was confirmed positive for COVID-19 on 3rd May. As he is an expert in the oil industry, his entry into the country had been approved by the government. Besides highly skilled workers and other special cases like these, however, Vietnam has still been closing its doors to foreign arrivals.

The other two are Vietnamese citizens repatriated from Russia on 13th May on a government-facilitated flight. They are two men aged 26 and 31 respectively.

All newly discharged patients will continue to serve another 14-day quarantine period for monitoring.

Patient 91 continues to recover, now able to sit up

A video taken in the Chợ Rẫy Hospital, where the 43-year-old British pilot known as Patient 91 is being treated, was published this morning, showing him sitting up and moving his legs with the instructions of a medical worker.

According to updates from the hospital, the man is now free of both the coronavirus and the bacteria that had caused severe infections to his lungs, and doctors have estimated that 60% of his lungs have regained their functionality. However, he still has to rely on ventilators at the moment.

Officials in the medical field of Vietnam have described this progress as “unbelievable”, given that just a few weeks ago, the patient was comatose on the brink of death with 90% of his lungs coagulated.

Vietnam’s COVID-19 update on 9th June

The case of Patient 91 has been receiving a lot of attention from the Vietnamese community in the past couple of months, with everyone hoping that he’ll pull through the ordeal. His recovery so far is already a testament to the skills and dedication of Vietnamese medical workers.
