2 More Imported COVID-19 Cases Reported In Vietnam This Morning, As Recovery Rate Hits 94.5%

COVID-19 in Vietnam, update on 8th June

Vietnam is currently on its 53rd consecutive day without any new COVID-19 infections discovered in the community. Since the last case of community transmission on 16th April, the country has still reported imported cases, placing the total number of COVID-19 cases at 331.

However, all are overseas Vietnamese citizens brought back by the government from countries affected by the pandemic. As all arrivals are quarantined and tested upon entry, none pose a threat to public health.

Many of these repatriated citizens have been declared free of the coronavirus and have been discharged as well. At the moment, the recovery count in Vietnam is sitting at 313.

In its daily update on the COVID-19 situation this morning, the Ministry of Health reported that 2 women returning from Japan have tested positive for COVID-19.

According to the report, the two women, aged 28 and 47 respectively, both work for a company in Hồ Chí Minh City. They traveled to Mexico on 13th March, but were then stuck there due to the country’s border shutdown to curb the spread of COVID-19. On 4th June, they were able to fly to Japan, where they then boarded a repatriation flight organized by the Vietnamese government which landed in the central city of Đà Nẵng on 5th June.

All 343 passengers on the flight were quarantined upon arrival, and these two women were confirmed positive for COVID-19 on Saturday. They have been brought to the Quảng Nam Central Hospital for treatment.

Prior, on Friday, a 22-year-old man who returned from the UK to Hồ Chí Minh City also tested positive for COVID-19. With the new patients taken into account, Vietnam has now recorded a total of 331 COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the outbreak.

The National Hospital of Tropical Diseases in Hanoi just announced that it has discharged 6 more COVID-19 patients this morning. Previously, 9 others who had been receiving treatment at various medical facilities in Vietnam were also declared free of the coronavirus and discharged between 3rd and 5th June. All of these patients are Vietnamese citizens repatriated from other countries in May.

So far, 313 out of 331 COVID-19 cases in Vietnam have recovered, representing a recovery rate of 94.5%. The country has also had no fatalities associated with the disease.

Only 18 cases are still active at the moment, among whom only 15 are still showing positive test results, while the other 3 have had at least 1 negative test.

Doctors at the Chợ Rẫy Hospital in Hồ Chí Minh City have also been keeping everyone updated on the condition of Patient 91 – one of the most critical COVID-19 cases in Vietnam and the only patient affected by community transmission who still remains in treatment. So far, there has been plenty of good news.

The 43-year-old patient now no longer requires the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a life support system that had been keeping him alive for 2 months. He is also clear of Burkholderia cenocepacia, a type of bacteria that caused severe infections in his lungs. Previously, the man was confirmed free of COVID-19 on 19th May.

However, doctors are still giving him extensive care, as they say he’s still at risk of contracting other types of bacteria.

With only 18 patients still in treatment, Vietnam is well on its track to completely flatten the COVID-19 curve. However, with millions still infected around the world, the global battle against the pandemic is far from over.

Vietnam has been trying its best to help out its overseas citizens as well as other nations, so for now, let’s continue to show our support to our government by adhering to official warnings to stay alert.
