Top mall in the East
Overall Rating

4.0
For Easties (Singaporeans living in the East) Tampines 1 is easily the best mall in our area. It has all the amenities and facilities that you can find in the average Orchard Mall shopping centre. Short of the luxury brands, you can get a lot of the top fashion brands here - Topman, Dorothy Perkins and now MUJI.

Tampines 1 also provides a good mix of high-end and regular food offerings. For example for the bakeries you have Toast Box, Rive Gauche and Yamazaki Boulangerie on the same floor to choose from.

My only complaint is the layout of Tampines 1. The first floor has hardly any open space. And since the only open space is nearly always taken up by some sale booth or another, the ground floor is perennially overcrowded. Remember a lot of pedestrians walk through the mall just to get from the MRT to the other malls. Since this is an architectural problem, you can't avoid it unless you go during quieter times - which is nearly never.

When Tampines 1 was launched in 2009, there was much hyped about the sub-urban mall. At first I was doubtful of Tampines 1. To tell the truth, I found that its "chic" existence within the Tampines heartland would make a rather awkward combination. Nonetheless, I was proven wrong. Till today, Tampines 1 continues to be jam-packed with visitors not only in weekdays but weekends as well. This proves that the mall is a popular spot for customers.

Perhaps one of the reason why Tampines 1 continues to be popular is its ability to provide an apt metropolitan feel to visitors living in the East without having the need to travel to farther away places like Orchard or City Hall. Indeed, Tampines 1 aims to "bring a breath of metropolitan lifestyle to the Tampines area". The mall certainly lives up to this by offering a wide-range of urbane shops, from dining to entertainment to fashion. The shops available in Tampines 1 are exceptional in the sense that they could not be found elsewhere in Tampines and are usually located within the central area like Orchard.

For one, the mall has Cold Storage. The eateries available are also more in-tune with fine dining like "BBQ Chicken" and "BBQ Delights". In terms of shopping, urbane fashion is brought to the heartland with the opening of noted stores like "Uniqlo", "Topshop" and "Topman". Personally, one of my favourite shops is "Urban Write", which sells chic yet durable stationery for its customers. The shop's presence in Tampines 1 is significant because it is the only other outlet aside from one situated in Orchard Central.

Tampines 1 also frequently puts in place discounts and special offers to further simulate
customers' interests in visiting the mall. For instance, coming 23 and 24 June, Tampines 1 have hourly specials at selected malls. The previous year in 2011, Tampines 1 also engaged visitors by holding Facebook contest that entitled the winner up to S$320 shopping vouchers! While retaining its classy feel, Tampines 1 has not failed to continue to woo its visitors, making it a metropolis favourite to many visitors.

An OK mall with upmarket clothing shops

A part of a trio of malls in the surrounding area, Tampines 1 is the newest to be opened in the busy central tampines area. Conveniently located just outside the exit of Tampines MRT station, it's very easy to make a quick stop here.

I used to think that Tampines 1 was a completely unecessary addition to the other two malls nearby, Tampines Mall and Century square. Both the other malls already had stores that covered everyone's needs. 2 Cinemas, 2 arcades, electronic stores, restaurants, cafes, everything was already there. Only highlight of Tampines 1 is the more upmarket clothing stores (Topshop, Topman, Newlook etc), the japanese & korean minimarts. But recently T1 has had new additions to the current shops. One of the new shops is DAISO. DAISO is a huge favourite with its price tag of $2 for everything, its addition to the mall certainly brought a crowd it.

Fast food, snacks are all mostly at the basement with the exception of the food court at the top level of the mall. Food at basement's quite yummy, usually I'll just buy a couple of things from a few food stalls and call it a meal cause the food court's always crowded during lunch time. Other places to eat would be the restaurants scattered across the levels.

I wouldn't say that Tampines 1 is a mall I would die without or incredibly useful seeing there are almost-duplicate malls in walking distance, but it has it's unique shops and it's uses.

Never mind that the travelling time usually takes about 40 minutes, I always make it a point to visit the shopping mall on a weekly basis. My entire wardrobe depends it, it's crucial.

Hands down, my favourite store is definitely PUNKSTAR. People who loves art and fashion, this is it. The local store sells skinny jeans, unique t-shirts, wallets and a lot more ultra cool apparels and accessories! The store sells everthing. I could have sworn I've seen a cushion case somewhere... That is, if my memory serves me right. Ladies might want to check out the canvas bags. To the crew behind PUNKSTAR, you've got a fan!

Foodie lovers, head down to THE COFFEE BEAN & TEA LEAF and CUPCAKES WITH LOVE! For leisure and entertainment, check out PLAYBOXX.

More than the Heartlands
Overall Rating

When I first chanced upon the mall it seemed like just another neighbourhood mall, just fitted with more things and shops. Situated at Tampines MRT itself, it is convenient to get to and being surrounded by 2 other neighbouring malls seemingly boost its popularity because it is somewhat like being located in a small "shopping area".

I especially love the mall because it is convenient to get to and the crowds are not overwhelming. The mall is relatively big in size and has almost all the basic necessities of the average shopper. It is mounted with different types of restaurants serving a variety of cuisines, coupled with the convenience of having the neighbourhood eating areas nearby. It also has a cinema, and many of the big brands available in store. Such include, Topshop and Topman ( which are two levels ), the accessories giant Diva and many many more. Although it might seem like it is just suitable for the heartlands, I am rather attracted to it because I can get to shop at ease of my comfort clothing and not having to dress up and travel all the way to the orchard area to squeeze with the crowds just to try on things from Topshop for example. It is also a cheaper alternative because I can easily access cheaper food just outside the mall, and not have to spend my money on restaurants if my finances do not permit.

Tampines 1 is definitely a place to check out if you haven't already done so because it does have a lot in store and it is definitely one that has more to offer than what meets the eye. However, the mall can get quite crowded at peak hours, and weekends.

Located at a heartland location in Tampines, together with Tampines Mall and Century Square, Tampines now had it's third shopping mall which is Tampines1. I actually prefer Tampines1 more than Tampines Mall and Century Square. Because all the shops that can be found in town are all in Tampines1! There are many shops such as Topshop, Diva, Etude House , G2000 and many more!

It's very convenient for me as I stay in the East side of Singapore. On days whereby I am very lazy to travel to town to get my shopping items, I can go to Tampines1 and buy my things. It is also a popular hangout place for the teenagers too!

Another mall? nah. Some may think three malls concentrated in one area is kind of ridiculous but to people like me who love to shop i Don't think its redundant at all To have The additional tampines One.in fact, Tampines one Is unique and carries merchandise And facilities that the other malls do not carry such as a rooftop water playground. Tampines One creates convenience and Variety to its patrons . One thing that is unique about tampines One is how it's basement is so nicely designed to make you feel like buying everything you see. It is the perfect place to shop for clothing and or to just chill and have a drink at cafes such as bakerzin. It has almost everything and anything you would need.Tampines one is basically a million good things stuffed into one. You should definitely visit the mall If you decide to have a shopping spree.

Tampines 1 is the newest mall opened in Tampines and currently, the mall is well visited by the daily shoppers. The mall is located just next to the Tampines MRT Station and just opposite the Tampines Mall. The exterior of the mall is quite fascinating, a number of restaurants and retail shops are available inside the mall.

Some of the restaurants would include Thai Express, Dian Xiao Er , Imperial Tressure and more. At the lower level ( basement 1) , you could find many stalls selling snacks such as Dairy Queen, Carl's Jr, Frolick, Subway and more. At this level, there is also Cold Storage which makes it convenient for the residence nearby to get their groceries and household needs

If you intend to shop for clothes and accessories, you might want to explore the level 2. This level is fully occupied with the accessories and fashion retails, such as  Esprit, G2000, New Look, Topshop, Uniqlo and more.

Meanwhile at the highest level ( level 5) is more concentrated with beauty and wellness center.

In Tampines 1, all your needs are met. In contrast to most heartland malls and its location rival Tampines mall, Tampines 1 stands out as a stand alone town shopping centre in the heartland. Let me explain.

Most heartland malls target the wallets and credit cards of the 30-40 years old demographic, with domestic shops like Fairprice (supermarket), western food store, maybe a comics connections for buying toys for your kids or an arcade, the usual fast food joint. At Tampines mall, there is still the regular outlet of an arcade and a fast food joint, but it is catered to the new generations with "cooler" choices like Chippys and Carl's Junior for food. The mall also managed to get Uniqlo to have an outlet there and that is definitely bonus plus points for me going there. Don't get me wrong, the mall still has family as an orientation, but just slightly more catered to teenagers and young adults.

I went to Tampines one to shop around and managed to bag myself a few t-shirt from Uniqlo, chippys for snacks and some JCO donuts to bring home. I ended the whole experience with an escape to their top floor Food court for a hearty plate of Hokkien Mee (fried noodles with prawn and eggs).

JCO donut is one of those temptations I just can't seem to get away from. My usual picks for a box of 12 would contain all their fully stuffed donuts, which equates more like stuffed bread than donut as it lacks the hole in the center. Nevertheless, my recommendations would be the whynut; a donuts with a white chocolate topping with normal chocolate lines decorated on top of it. Having one bite is like heaven exploding in my mouth and it gives me the feeling that nothing can ever get me down from the first bite on. It is so good that I literally have to restrain myself from ever laying eyes on JCO or else there goes my healthy eating habits and hello whynuts.

Chippys is also a wonderful snack. I really do think I need to stay away from snacks as I am salivating from just typing here. Look out for their hotdog with mash potato as it has been good for me always regardless of the outlet I went to.

Uniqlo like I explained in my dedicated review provides the best fitting length and shoulder cutting for Asians so that it does not look like we have slump shoulders with a slightly oversized t-shirt.

Last but not least, the Hokkien Mee was a clear round-up of my day at Tampines 1. Great food, great friends equals a great day, don't you all agree? Waiting for your food is a true testament on how good the food is. For me, the noodles was easy on the taste and it doesn't leave a lingering taste which some places have done. Next, the prawns are fresh and big for a 4.80 plate and for all you budget Singaporeans, fish out for that Kopitiam card for that coveted 10% discount on all food paid with the card.

All in all, Tampines 1 gives me the experience I would typically find at town, but with so much ease and convenience at a Heartland area. This means I do not have to dress up nicely to enjoy good food and a good shopping experience! Tampines 1 can be found by exiting the right hand side of Tampines MRT.

I live in the East, so when Tampines 1 opened, I really wondered if Tampines needed 3 Shopping centres within the same location. I was mainly concerned with the crowds, but in small country like Singapore, I suppose you generally can't avoid crowds no matter you go.

Initially I did not like Tampines 1, because I found the shops offered there to be pretty lacklustre. With the exception of Uniqlo, which was a novelty to be had.

However, with the recent renovations, and the additiion of stores like Muji and a Daiso (coming soon) , as well as several new eateries in the Basement floor, I do believe there is not much reason for me to be heading to town to get my shopping done.
