Ah Loy Thai serves one of the most authentic Thai dishes in Singapore. Having been to Thailand many times and trying their local dishes in Thailand really spoiled my tastebuds. This is because when I came back to Singapore, I thought I was unable to find such good and authentic Thai food anymore. Thankfully, my partner brought me to Ah Loy Thai at Shaw Tower.

We ordered a Phat Thai, Pineapple Fried Rice, Green Curry and Wrapped Pandan Chicken. It is indeed too much food for two. But I just had to try them all. The Phat Thai is just like the one I have tried in Thailand! I was overjoyed as I have been craving for this for the longest time! Their pineapple rice however, was a let down as it was a tad too oily. However, the green curry savaged it all. The fragrant curry, served with generous amounts of chicken took my breath away the first time i tried it. It was my favorite dish that day.

I would definitely be back for more Thai food as there are many things on the menu that I have not gotten a chance to try. However, to avoid the dinner crowd and long queues, it is advisable to visit Ah Loy Thai during non -peak hours.

Ah Loy Thai is one of the must visit restaurant if you are fan of Thai cuisines. It is definitely one of the best Thai restaurant in Singapore. Although it is not as popular as Thai Express, which has a dozen franchises throughout Singapore, it can definitely beat the dishes at Thai Express anytime.

Located in Shaw Tower in Bugis, it is a 15 minute walk from the station, diagonally across the road from the National Library. The building looks a little run down and can do with a little upgrading, but it houses some really good food finds!

Some of the must tries at include the buttered calamari rings (the best calamari ever!!!), the pineapple fried rice and the mango crispy chicken. The buttered calamari rings will make you swoon, my friends and I always order double portions because it is just so good! The tom yam soup can be a little spicy, so if you cannot take spicy food, it's better to forgo it. The ice-lemon tea there is horrid though, so I'd advise you to pick out something safer, like a can of cola.

The service at Ah Loy Thai is pretty bad though. There was once we accidentally ordered an extra dish instead of an extra plate of rice like we wanted, but we realised it a little too late and the person simply refused to change it for us because the food was already being prepared by the chef. We ended up having two portions of beef which wasn't all that nice either.

All in all, Ah Loy Thai is really good, but yet does not have another outlet elsewhere, so it is a common sight to find a long queue outside during dinner time. Also, the place is pretty cramp so there is a limited capacity they can house at one go. If you are a big group and would like to visit the place in the night, it would be smart to make a reservation first!

I rarely come by restaurants that keeps me going back to try more dishes so you how much i enjoyed the food here.

Pineapple Fried Rice: Very flavourful, it has a good amount of juicy shrimps and raisins. it's not the usual pineapple rice with a very distinct yellow. The portion is big, could be shared between 2 person.

Tom Yum Soup: Shiok. It's very spicy but addictive! I love the Tom Yum Soup with Fish.

Phad Thai: It's different from the ones i had previously which were spicy. I still prefer the fried rice!

Thai Pandan Chicken: 4 huge chunks of chicken wrapped indivually in pandan leaves, tender & well marinated. However, it's better to stop at 1.

Mango Chicken: Slices of fried crispy chicken drizzled with sweet & spicy sauce, can serve 2 -3 persons.

If you're going in a pair, can order the rice/phad thai with a bowl of tom yum soup and a dish of mango chicken to share it's more than enough to fill your stomach!

First time trying this restaurant out and I'm sure gonna go back there sometime again!

Never been a great fan of Thai cuisine though I didn't hate it either. So when my friend brought up this restaurant I wasn't really fond of it but I was feeling adventurous, well, and a little too hungry. Glad that we didn't had to wait too long for the dishes to arrive although I found it weird that the rice and drinks didn't come first. A pity we didn't get to try out the Garlic Pork I wanted but the Fried Calamari we ordered instead was really good and goes well with its sauce! The must try would still be the Tom Yum Seafood Soup with it's spices just nice.

Price was within acceptable range for such a restaurant and the tables were cozy. Service is not too bad although we had to go to the counter ourselves to place the order and asked to pay in advance. Minor issues at best.

Enjoyed the meal, ordered three dishes for three people and it was more than enough. A place I would recommend to my friends!

My favourite Thai restaurant
Overall Score

I am an Ah Loy Thai fan through and through, ever since my friend had the good sense to introduce me to a — and I quote — “super good Thai place”.

Shaw Towers is a short walk from Bugis, so location wise it is still pretty accessible. The place can get SUPER crowded at dinnertime, so don’t ever try going down with an empty stomach or without patience. If I’m not wrong, they don’t take any reservations after 6pm. So anytime before that, remember to make one because nobody likes to wait!

The glass noodles are superb, and the best I’ve ever tried in my entire life. I am particular about bean sprouts, so I make it a point to request for my special order. However, during one of my visits during dinnertime, they said they couldn’t. Ah well. The Thai tom yum is also delectable, and good for 2. I think sharing among a group of 4 will result in you feeling bummed out about the empty pot, because it is simply not enough.

The fried calamaris are not too bad, but as I’m not a fan of calamari I usually skip this unless my friends order it.

All in all, Ah Loy Thai remains my favourite Thai restaurant in Singapore.

I fancy Ah Loy Thai for its authentic Thai food and reasonable pricing. They close early on Sundays though so be sure to check their opening hours if you don't wanr to be let down. There is Tom's Palette, an ice cream eatery, nearby so you can head there for some good dessert after your meal.

I've tried: Tom Yum, Green Curry, Mango Salad (spicy), Pandan Wrapped chicken (very nice a must try!), Buttered Calamari, Pad Thai (nothing fantastic) and a few other dishes I forgot since it has been a few months ago.

Most of their food are flavourful and although they have spices infused they're not that spicy. You could neutralise the spice with some milk/dairy products though (a trick I learnt awhile back).

Be prepared to queue up be it on a weekday or weekend, and also be prepared to squeeze while enjoying your meal because for a customer base so large, the store is actually relatively tad small!

Being the food connoisseur I am and that too an ardent fan of Thai food, I always go in search of good Thai eateries with my friends. A place I’d like to introduce to you today is ‘Ah Loy Thai’. Tucked in the heart of Bugis, in the premises of Shaw Towers, the eatery is by far serves the best Thai food for its affordable price range when you compare with Thai Express for an example. My favourite, must-have dishes for every Thai meal would be Tom yam (seafood) soup, Pandan chicken, Sambal kangkong. To finish my meal off with Mango Sticky Rice would be a blessing. Though, I seldom get to enjoy my Mango sticky rice when I’m here as it’s often sold out by the time I order, the Tom yam soup never fails to disappoint. I can assure you your hearty meal would cost you less than $20. However, the one thing that could be improved would be to have longer operating hours. At present, they open from 12-8pm (Mon-Thurs) and 1-7pm (Fri). They are closed on Sundays and public holidays. What a pity! But nonetheless, do pop by ‘Ah Loy Thai’ when you’re craving some spicy food. You’ll never be disappointed. It’s best to have a late lunch here so that you’d have all the luxury of time and hopefully the Mango Sticky Rice won’t be sold out too.

Ah Loy Thai has great and affordable Thai food. Personally, I feel that the food is authentic, and it’s definitely one of my go-to places for Thai food.

The food I had was great. My favourite dish was possibly the butter calamari. It might sound terribly unhealthy, but trust me it’s worth every calorie. The calamari is fragrant, tasty and crunchy. The steamed fish with glass noodles is also a great choice, and the fish is cooked well, and has just the right amount of spice.

However, do make a reservation, even on a weekday night as the place gets really crowded during dinner time, and they close pretty early.

Thai food is delicious, sadly in Singapore, it is tough to find authentic food. In my opinion, true cuisine from The Land of Smiles will never arrive on our shores, but Ah Loy Thai does provide good enough food for us to enjoy.

I particularly enjoyed the mango salad, that apparently is one of their specialities. It has that zesty taste that many other Thai eateries lack, and is that one dish that rendered me a fan. Other than that, food here can be found elsewhere, nothing too special, but nothing poor either,

A good place to have dinner.

Ah Loy Thai is one of the cheaper yet decent Thai food restaurants in Singapore. There is usually a queue in the evenings, so try to go early if possible to get a table.

Most of the dishes there are reasonably priced with reasonable portions. The pad thai was one of my favourite dishes. Even though it looks really simple, each mouthful of noodles I ate was really flavourful. The butter calamari was awesome! My friends and I couldn't stop eating it, and the whole dish was gone within a few minutes. On the other hand, I didn't really like the tom yum goong, which was only spicy and didn't have any other flavour to it.

This place is a no-frills restaurant, so don't expect good service. All the tables and chairs are quite close to each other too, as the whole space is quite small. However, the food is quite decent enough for me to come back in the future.
