12 Most Unique Mooncake Flavours Of 2017 – Tom Yum, Root Beer, And Kopi With Salted Hokkaido Milk

Most interesting mooncake flavours this Mid-Autumn Festival

Image adapted from: Sheraton Singapore

We know the Mid-Autumn Festival’s ‘round the corner when mooncake booths begin sprouting up at every shopping mall atrium, and the never-ending debate between #TeamTraditional and #TeamSnowskin heats up yet again.

But with the many newfangled mooncake flavours hitting our shores, it’s no longer just the baked and snowskin varieties that we’ve gotta choose from. We’re seeing more hipster mooncakes emerge, in the likes of tom yum and yuzu bird’s nest.

That’s why we’ve rounded up 12 of Singapore’s most unique mooncake flavours for adventurous mooncake-lovers to try. And the best part: if you’re a DBS/POSB cardmember, you’ll get discounts on ALL the mooncakes here!

1. Tom Yum – Bakerzin

Sweet-savoury food combinations often run the risk of tasting odd – but Bakerzin’s got the sweet-sour-spicy ratio on point with their tom yum mooncake. A traditional baked mooncake skin encases the filling, which packs a mildly sour and spicy kick reminiscent of the Thai dish itself.

Act fast to sink your teeth into this unique flavour combo – it’s part of Bakerzin’s limited edition Bold Collection ($61.68 for 4, assorted flavours), which only has 500 boxes stocked!

If the bitterness of alcohol’s more up your alley, Bakerzin’s apple vodka snow skin mooncake and butterscotch Baileys snow skin mooncake ($50.47 for 8, assorted flavours) aren’t to be missed either.

Nestled in the centre of either mooncake is an alcohol-infused white chocolate truffle ganache that’ll give you the kick of liquor – just without the hangover.

2. Kopi with Salted Hokkaido Milk – The Fullerton Hotel Singapore

Coffee-flavoured foods are a dime a dozen, but this Kopi-flavoured mooncake ($60 for 4) stands out with its salted Hokkaido milk core – we’ve got The Fullerton Hotel Singapore to thank for this. Fragrant coffee paste, Hokkaido’s famed dairy products, and a velvety smooth snow skin layer – an A+ combination.

3. Root Beer – Goodwood Park Hotel

Drinking root beer to act “grown-up” was something I did as a child. That’s why Goodwood Park’s Root Beer mooncake ($36 for 2) brings back fond memories of the past – except that this mooncake packs in a legit alcohol kick. A tinge of rum and vanilla beans go into this concoction, before everything’s enveloped in snow skin to form a tastebud-pleasing morsel.

4. Violette and Gin – Grand Hyatt Singapore

Past Mid-Autumn Festivals have seen Grand Hyatt Singapore roll out alcoholic mooncakes – and this year’s no different. Look out for its Violette and Gin mooncake ($69 for 8, assorted flavours available): a blend of Tanqueray No. TEN gin, crème de violette liquor, and a strong floral essence.

Inspiration for this mooncake came from the hotel’s newly-opened gin and tonic bar. Noticing that the Tanqueray No. TEN gin’s a hot favourite among customers, the pastry masters of the Hyatt decided to combine it with violette, as both flavours harmonise well together.

Imagine the chewy fragrance of your typical mixed nuts mooncake – but now with the added flavour of premium Spanish iberico pork.

This tasty – yet undeniably sinful – treat’s won over the hearts of so many in its debut year, so Mandarin Orchard’s putting it on the Mid-Autumn menu again for the second time running!

We’ve tried McDonalds’ coconut pie. Next on the list of coconut-flavoured foods: Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel’s Coconut Paste with Hazelnut mooncake ($78 for 4). You may be forking out a handful more dollars for the latter, but to justify its price tag, the hotel only uses coconut paste that’s air-flown from Hong Kong, which will leave a rich, creamy taste in your mouth.

The best part: the hotel bakes their mooncakes with less sugar, so you won’t have to worry about packing on the pounds post Mid-Autumn feasting!

They’ve pleased the crowds with their Baileys-flavoured mooncake in previous years, and this year’s new kid on the block – the Cherie Brandy mooncake ($65 for 8, assorted flavours) – doesn’t disappoint either.

It’s your typical white lotus mooncake, but with an added pinch of Morello cherries, unsalted butter-flavoured truffle, and brandy to spice it all up.
