Gone are the days when family photoshoots used to be boring and extra formal. These days, you can take fun photos with your parents, friends, and even your pets at all types of creative photo studios in Singapore – be it a self-shoot studio, black and white vintage booth, or even inside a retro bar.
Whether you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind vintage photo studio or photographers that specialise in classic wedding shoots, here are nine themed photo studios that might suit the creative vision you’re going for.
Table of Contents
If it’s your first time going for a photoshoot, here are a few fashion and grooming tips to keep in mind.
Plan your outfits in advance so you aren’t a frazzled mess on the day of your photoshoot. If you’re holding this shoot with loved ones, consider going for a simple theme, such as picking a solid colour to wear so the photo looks cohesive.
We recommend bold or pastel hues like this red satin midi dress and salmon pink, pinstripe blazer for an extra pop of colour. Otherwise, you can go for neutral, earth-toned colours like this olive-green jumpsuit and khaki-toned shirt for a softer vibe.
If you’re not sure if your choice of colour will clash with the backdrop of your photoshoot, check in with the studio. They should be able to give you suggestions that’ll best match the theme you’re going for.
The night before your photoshoot, use a garment steamer to iron out wrinkles in your outfit. You can even pack your outfit in a garment bag then change at the studio to keep your clothes neat and tidy.
Implement any new skincare routines at least 2 weeks before your photoshoot. This will give you time to see an improvement in your skin and correct any mishaps should you find yourself breaking out because of your new routine.
For starters, remove any makeup you wear with a facial oil cleanser then double cleanse with a fragrance-free face wash to prevent any skin irritations. Even out bumpy skin texture with a hydrating toner and follow with a facial moisturiser. You can also include a sheet mask to target specific problems, such dryness, enlarged pores, and sagging skin.
You’ll want a clean base before makeup application so that it’ll last throughout the day. Start off with your regular skincare routine then follow up with a makeup primer to smoothen out the texture of your skin.
Keep your makeup base matte instead of dewy, as the latter might make your skin look oily under bright studio lights. Opt for a medium to full-coverage foundation for oily skin then press finishing powder to set everything in place. A setting spray will also help mattify shine and extend wear on your makeup.
Men – you’ll want to be properly groomed as well to look your best in your photos. Skip the razors at home and splurge on a shave and cut at a gentlemen’s barber for a dapper look. If you’re short on time, using an aftershave balm can prevent ingrown hairs and red bumps on the skin.
P.S. You can find all these products on Amazon Singapore, which is holding its annual Amazon Black Friday Sale from 21st November to 2nd December 2024. TSL readers, you can even enjoy $10 off a minimum $60 spend during this promotion period.

An indoor photo session typically lasts for 30 minutes, but the duration may extend if more people are involved in the shoot. For an outdoor shoot, you’ll get to choose a location and have up to 3 people – 2 adults and 1 child.

Unlike most photo studios that constantly evolve to reflect the current trends, Hip Xiong Photo Studio is, honestly, very dated – in a good way.
The studio specialises in wet plate photography – a style that was all the hype way back in the 1850s. In a nutshell, it’s a chemical process that turns a metal plate into a “film” to produce a blackened image. The results are rustic 19th-century-styled portraits, like the pics you might find in your grandparents’ drawers.
Each 45-minute photo session gives you 1 plate to take home that will last hundreds of years.
Hip Xiong Photo Studio used to have a brick-and-mortar studio in Geylang but they now operate on a house call and event basis. They can set up just about anywhere, as long as there’s an accessible power point and a running water supply. After the shoot, you’ll even be able to watch the development of the tintype plate right before your eyes.
Price: From $600 for 1-2 pax 3-hour shoot (inclusive of setup and teardown)
