Scarfing down street food, playing carnival games, and soaking in the ambience of a bustling Taiwanese night market is an absolute vibe. What if we told you that you can experience that without having to fly all the way to Taipei, but just taking the MRT to the far end of the North-East Line?
Punggolites have it good this month, because the Taiwan Night Market is happening at Waterway Point’s outdoor plaza from now till 12th May 2024. Besides a diverse spread of street food goodies from XXL fried chicken cutlets to juicy king oyster mushrooms, there’ll also be game kiosks and live music performances to look forward to.

You can’t have a Taiwan Night Market pop-up without serving all the street food staples. Stroll through the stalls to find the likes of XXL Chicken Chop ($6), chewy Sweet Potato Balls ($5 for 10), and Egg Rolls (from $8) stuffed with meat, veggies, and crispy you tiao AKA dough fritters.

Another Taiwanese must-eat is the Grilled King Oyster Mushroom ($6). It’s burst-in-your-mouth levels of juicy, and you can have it slathered in your choice of seaweed, lemon pepper, or spicy garlic dressing.

For dessert, savour not only the classic Muah Chee ($6) studded with crushed peanuts or black sesame, but new-age renditions tossed in matcha, Oreo, or purple sweet potato. There are also satisfyingly crispy Crepes (from $5) which are wafer-thin, sandwiching fillings like Nutella, cornflakes, marshmallows, and rainbow sprinkles.

Amidst all the nomming, both kids and the young at heart can have a go at the many game stations available. There is a mix of old-school arcade machines as well as carnival games like bean bag toss and target shooting, where you could bag prizes like cute plushies and toy sets.

Make sure to swing by on 10th and 11th May for an extra rousing atmosphere, as local singer and keyboardist duo Cloud & Party will be filling the air with melodious tunes at 7pm.
The Taiwan Night Market is held at the open-air space outside Waterway Point, towards the park connector route. If you fancy burning some calories before and after your street food feast, you can consider making a cycling expedition out of it.
While you’re there, check out the many other things to do in Punggol! It may be situated at the edge of the country, but it’s well worth a visit.
