Singapura: The Musical – An Insight Into Singapore’s History Through Song & Dance

About Singapura: The Musical

Nothing could be drier than trying to memorise all the dates and facts about things that have happened in the past. But when I first heard about Singapura: The Musical, I was intrigued. After all, I studied theatre in university and a musical about Singapore’s pre-independence from a foreign theatre company sounded like an interesting concept.

This musical documents the journey of a few everyday Singaporeans as they navigated the formative years of Singapore from 1955 to 1965 – a tumultuous time in Singapore’s history, with events like the Hock Lee bus riots taking place.

Audiences are promised stories of “love, hope and new beginnings,” as characters work towards a better future and a better home, despite the backdrop of the narrative. What you will get are personal yet universal stories that won’t necessarily appear in your History textbooks, but stories that will highlight the resilience of the Singaporean spirit.b2ap3_thumbnail_Singapura-The-Musical-Publicity-Images-credit-to-Singapura-The-Musical-5.JPGb2ap3_thumbnail_Singapura-The-Musical-Publicity-Images-credit-to-Singapura-The-Musical-5.JPGSource: Singapura: The Musical

Created by Filipino composer Ed Gatchalian, who was inspired by stories of the late Lee Kuan Yew, this international production is the product of three long years of intensive research and extensive interviews about the unsung heroes who played a part in Singapore gaining her independence. And that’s what sets it apart – it’s based on interviews with people who lived in Singapore during the aforementioned period, so the storyline is based on real stories from real people and not just some interpretation of our history.

With an international cast and creative team from Philippines, United States, England and South Africa, Singapura: The Musical is a definite must-see.
