Plaza Brasserie, located at PARKROYAL on Beach Road, is a longstanding buffet in Singapore, serving mostly Asian and local delights. Known for their popular crab buffet, this time round they have brought back their Seafood “Treasures of The Sea Buffet” which is available till the end of April.
It is a seafood buffet so expect a wide array of fresh seafood from crabs, prawns, clams, oysters, mussels and cockles to freshly prepared sashimi.
One of the reasons some people avoid buffets is due to the lack of freshness in the food, and that’s why live stations are a must. Besides their seafood stations, Plaza Brasserie has quite a number of live stations whipping up anything from chocolate prata to ramen.
And you can see how much the chefs take pride in their work from the excellent food presentation as they meticulously plate the food for every diner right before your eyes.
The must-orders are the fish dishes that they specially prepare and deliver to your table. The fish menu is not that obvious so make sure you keep a lookout for it. Diners are given a choice of Red Garoupa, Sea Bass and Chef Jackson Goh’s speciality, claypot Curry Fish Head.
I like my fish steamed as it is one of the easiest ways to measure its freshness and savor its goodness! The delicate and succulent flesh of Plaza Brasserie’s steamed fish instantly melted in my mouth! Oooooh.
Another highlight is over at the Salmon station, which offers four different Salmon delicacies: – Salmon “Wellington”, Classic baked Whole Salmon with Herb Spices, Grilled Salmon Fillet with Asian Sambal Chilli in Banana Leave, and Sea-salt Crusted Salmon with Bread Stuffing.
The Salmon “Wellington” stood out the most – now, who wouldn’t love a tender-baked Salmon encased in a golden-crusted pastry? Also, your handpicked crustaceans will be cooked in a sauce of your choice: Black Bean, ‘XO’ or Spicy Coriander Sauce.
Now that we’ve talked about some of the hits, lets go through some of the misses. The widely raved roast pork belly was rather disappointing. It was rather mediocre – a far cry from the crispy-skinned, melt-in-your-mouth roast pork I heard about.
I personally find Plaza Brasserie best suited for celebratory dinners with extended families. Reason being, the food doesn’t steer too far away from the traditional Chinese cuisine which we are so adapted to.
There are quite a number of common “zi char” dishes, which are on par with regular upscale Chinese restaurants, and that is pretty impressive for buffet standards. Also, the unlimited number of cook-to-order fresh seafood served on a common plate maintains the unity symbolism as families share and commute round the table. The Curry Fish Head served to your table is definitely an icing on the cake.
Having mentioned that, the upcoming ‘The Best for Mum’ buffet in the month of May will allow complimentary dining for mums and grandmas when accompanied by two paying adults for lunch, and three paying adults for dinner – making this buffet a good consideration for the occasion.
