Pang Sua Pond: Second Largest Man-Made Wetland In SG, With An Aesthetic Boardwalk

Pang Sua Pond, Bukit Panjang

There are several things you might know Bukit Panjang for: Uncle KKM, Ten Mile Junction, and where Singapore’s first LRT line was launched. If you needed another reason to visit the ‘hood, let Pang Sua Pond be it.

History of Pang Sua Pond

Jurong Lake Gardens holds the title for the largest man-made floating wetland in Singapore, but we’ll have you know that Pang Sua Pond doesn’t rank too far behind, with Sengkang Floating Wetlands rounding out the podium.

Originally built as a stormwater collection pond in the 1990s, the pond underwent a 30-month rejuvenation under PUB’s Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) scheme in 2014, transforming it into the pocket of nature it is today.

Fun fact: Pang Sua is said to be transliterated from its original Hokkien name, which reads 捧沙 (pháng-soa), or “holding sand”.

Where is Pang Sua Pond?

Pang Sua Pond is located by the Senja-Cashew Community Club, next to Bukit Panjang Neighbourhood 5 Park. The nearest LRT station is Senja LRT Station, which is a 7-minute walk away, although you could also get there via a 10-minute walk from Bukit Panjang MRT Station.

What’s at the pond?

On the northern banks of the pond is a 3G Wellness Centre with an outdoor exercise area. The first of its kind in Singapore when it was opened in March 2017, the 3G in its name stands for 3-Generation, aiming to encourage residents of all ages to be active together.

Besides the exercise area, there are activity rooms as well as a rooftop terrace, where you’ll get to enjoy an even higher viewpoint of the pond.

ICYMI, the latest addition to the 3G Wellness Centre is an Active Ageing Centre (AAC) for elderly residents.

You can’t visit Pang Sua Pond and miss the 480m-long boardwalk that rises 7m above the waters.

The winding boardwalk gives you the best view of the floating wetlands, which play host to a whole ecosystem of flora and fauna. If you were wondering what floating wetlands are, and why they’re man-made, it’s because they’re artificial platforms, planted with aquatic vegetation, that float on water bodies to improve the health of the water and for aesthetic value.

It’s not only in the day that the pond looks stunning – when the lights come on after nightfall, it transforms into a different kind of magical.

When festivals like National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival roll around, the pond takes on a new look with multi-coloured fairy lights that turn it into a different kind of wonderland.

Performance stage & lookout decks

Besides the Wellness Centre, Pang Sua Pond also has a performance stage and lookout decks that you can get to via the boardwalk, or the promenade that runs along Bukit Panjang Road.

  • A dog run near Block 534
  • A bee hotel that will support the biodiversity of the park
  • An expanded playground
  • An upgraded tai chi area, with shelter over the whole court
  • Ramps for smoother and increased access for all visitors
  • Thermoplastic paint on the existing paths to make them dementia-friendly
