While most of us have heard enough greenwashing talk about how we need to be doing more to save our planet, Northpoint City is out here trying to make sustainability fun.
How, you ask? From now till 30th April 2023, there’ll be free workshops for adults and kids at the mall, discounts on buying reusable products, as well as themed rooms with practical tips on how to incorporate sustainable practices in your day-to-day lives.
For 2 weeks this month, Northpoint City will be holding a “Happy Home, Happy Earth” exhibition where you can stroll through room after room of informative displays – each one inspiring different ways to reduce your carbon footprint starting from your home.
For example, find out easy ways to minimise food wastage in the kitchen or how to do small electrical repairs. As we said, simple and practical ideas that you can implement without much hassle.

When it comes to instilling good habits, starting young is the way to go. Kids can join the free upcycling workshops where they will learn how to reuse things that would generally be discarded and turn them into useful things. It’s basically arts and crafts with a purpose.
Happening from now till 23rd March, the workshops will entail using plastic bottles to make cute bunny-shaped pen pots; making finger puppets from old socks; and cutting out beverage cartons to make tags or bookmarks. Parents, do accompany your little ones below 5 years old to help them with the painting and cutting.
Adults can have their fun too with Repair Kopitiam – a free workshop to pick up useful skills to fix your broken barang-barang. You’ll learn how to use wood glue – commonly used in assembling furniture – as well as an electric power drill and soldering iron. Plus, they’ll teach you how to replace a 3-pin plug.
So, the next time you’re faced with a broken chair or faulty appliance and are tempted to simply throw them away, try repairing them yourself instead. Not only is it a fun DIY project, but you also save money from having to buy new ones or having to call a handyman.

Let the peeps at Friends of Food tell you how meal planning can easily be practised at home.
Snag freebies at the Friends of Food booth where the folks will be giving out meal planning templates. If you’re wondering what this has to do with sustainability, let me assure you that it does. Studies have shown that if we plan our meals beforehand and check our kitchen inventory prior to going grocery shopping, we can avoid a ton of household food waste.
Make a pledge to reduce food wastage at the Friends of Food booth.
The handouts don’t just end there. There are lucky draw prizes to be won too, including dining vouchers, kitchen storage containers, and grocery bags.
Speaking of grocery bags, if you’ve collected one too many tote bags from all your shopping escapades, donate your extra ones to PlasticLite SG. They’ll be setting up a corner for shoppers to give or take reusable bags for their shopping needs – all in a bid to reduce single-use plastic bags.
Simply pass your donations on to one of the representatives at the exhibition.
During the 2 weeks of the exhibition, Northpoint City will be conducting a donation drive to collect pre-loved and new toys for children aged 2-7 years; clothes for kids and teens from 2-17 years; and educational books or story books for young ones up to 16 years old for the beneficiaries of Methodist Welfare Services.
