When the autumn equinox hits, there’s a palpable scramble with throngs of people queuing up for the tastiest of mooncakes. But amidst the frenzy, we might miss the significance behind this festive season’s customs. After all, the Mid-Autumn Festival embodies so much more than just new fandangled mooncake flavours and overhanging lanterns.
Moonfest – A Mid-Autumn Celebration is an annual traditional Chinese arts fest by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay – and for six days, our iconic durian-shaped landmark will be transformed into a tiny enclave of the Orient. With an oriental tea house, outdoor Chinese opera stages and a Hanfu (traditional Han Chinese garb) parade, these programmes will have you wishing you lived in the time of ancient Beijing!

Go Karate Kid style and learn the basics of Ip Man and Bruce Lee’s famous martial art form, Wing Chun. It’s going to be led for free by martial arts pro, Daryl Yeo, who runs his own Wing Chun training centre. It’s only a 30-minute sesh, so it’s just enough for you to get a grasp of the moves but not too much where it’ll leave you aching the next day.

The Moonfest Tea Room offers a replica of traditional Chinese tea house activities, where visitors can drink tea while slipping into Chinese opera costumes – and even have a mini photoshoot while they’re at it. If it’s too warm for hot tea, sample some on-tap cold sparkling tea brewed by Pek Sin Choon, one of Singapore’s oldest tea merchants.

Can you sing, dance, do acrobatics and martial arts all at the same time? Because I know I sure can’t. These performers on the other hand will wow you with their stunts, all while singing.
Along the Esplanade waterfront, it’ll be a tribute to the age-old art of Chinese opera, which used to be traditionally performed on the streets. Open-air stages with free seating will be set up for you to enjoy the show, just like in the old times. There’ll be performances in Hokkien, Teochew, and Cantonese, with English and Chinese surtitles – for free!

We usually catch opera performances only during CNY or during the Hungry Ghost season – but there’s no need to wait for these occasions here. If you want to see the pros at it, the Hubei Provincial Peking Opera Theatre Troupe is one not to miss. This award-winning troupe is considered one of the best in China – their artistry and suave acrobatics alongside witty banter will leave you floored.
