With distinct earthy tones, matcha-flavoured anything is a favourite among Singaporeans. Be it for cakes or ice cream, us matcha-lovers don’t need to think twice when choosing from a sea of flavours.
But don’t confuse matcha with regular green tea – while they’re made from the same stuff, their methods of preparation are completely different! Green tea is made from steeping the leaves in water, while matcha is made of the actual leaves grounded into a fine powder – no points for guessing then that matcha is the more flavourful option.
We love our flavours strong, so check out these desserts that are the real deal.

Olella is a bakery specialised in choux-pastries, and among their sweet and savoury puff selections is a Matcha flavoured one. Encased in the craquelin choux are sweet azuki beans only discovered upon biting in.
A generous piping of matcha chantilly cream on top not only pairs well everything, but creates a quirky appearance too.

This little tart is nowhere as huge as the mountain it was named after, but at Two Bakers it does reach top flavours. Matcha ganache lies on a chocolate-sable based tart, with an azuki bean center. And to resemble its namesake, it’s capped with a layer of snowy-white softness made from creamy mousse.

Tiramisu is generally difficult to make, but Sun with Moon Japanese Dining and Cafe perfects its soft crumbly texture while making sure it’s still firm and solid. The layers of cream and matcha perfectly balance out each other, and we think the dusting of matcha on the blueberries is a nice touch too.

Why go for basic milkshakes when you can have a crazy Matcha Adzuki Shake from Cake Spade? This mug of delight holds an ice cream matcha shake with a matcha goma cake – piled high with whipped cream, sweet azuki beans, matcha wafer sticks and golden cornflakes. Sounds like an overwhelming combo, but slowly pick it apart and you’ll find yourself easing into an intense mouthgasm.

Expect fresh, pure and creamy ice cream from Azabu Sabo, as it’s made from farm-fresh quality Hokkaido milk. The matcha flavour here is special as it’s got finely grounded red bean in it too! This enhances the matcha flavour and adds just the right amount of sweetness.
Pay a bit extra and get a double cone – the matcha pairs very nicely with milk tea ice cream in particular.
