Relive a splendid remake of a traditional dessert that’s close to our hearts – the venerable Cendol from Sulaiman’s Famous Cendol Dan Rojak. Located amidst the many stalls at Pudu Market sits the shabby looking stall with a long snaking queue (though the actual wait time is only 10-15 minutes). This peculiar Indian man that speaks Cantonese like a native has perfected his craft of making one of the best Cendols in the whole of Malaysia.
Not only will you be treated to a generous serving of ingredients, the well-balanced combo of Gula Melaka syrup and oh-so-irresistible coconut milk mixes well with the soft azuki beans and slurpy cendol strands. Not forgetting that the ice is still shaved manually to bring the traditional taste and texture to life. Being sweet without overwhelming, it’s savoury enough to tempt you for round 2!

Bubur Cha – cha is a Nyonya dessert consisting of cubes of mainly yam and sweet potatoes cooked in a coconut milk base. Though it is common to find this Nyonya dessert throughout KL, many places lack the authenticity. Hong Kee Tongsui at Seksyen 17 though, is one of the few places that manages to do it right. Being in business for many decades, the stall owners have managed to perfect their recipe and have attracted a loyal following of customers over the years. Located in the wet market area of the Seksyen 17 market, at the Seksyen 17 food street, the stall opens its doors from 6pm till late at night. They also serve many other dishes and different types of hot and cold Tong Sui.

Being well known for their traditional old Malaya style cuisine, Old China Café has been around for many years and is fairly popular amongst those who live around the area. Located in Chinatown, in the heart of KL, tucked away in a corner is this gem of a café. Though the prices may be a little steep, the Sago Gula Melaka here is worth it. The texture is springy but not too chewy, as many places tend to overcook the sago. The Gula Melaka syrup is done well and you can even as the waiter for extra syrup if you wish!

The cheese gives the sweet crispy banana fritters a rich and cheesy flavor without being too overwhelming. There are different flavor combinations such as cheese and strawberry or cheese and white chocolate. All for RM 7 for 8 pieces! Love your crepes? Then time to delve deeper into how crepe became a phenomenon – say hello to crepe’s grandfather, the apam! However, unlike its Western counterparts, the apam has crispy edges and a soft, molten centre that melts in your mouth.
Om Shakti Chelo’s Appam in Western KL is often frequented by apam lovers simply because of its trademark Gula Melaka Apam. Not only is the batter formulated with magic, even the aromatic palm sugar will take you to food heaven. What’s left really, is for you to try it for yourself!
