We’re halfway through 2018, but thankfully, there’s still a constant stream of new food joints to spur us through the mid-year blues. There’s plenty of food for us to try, with a Japanese doughnut cafe, gyoza bar, and My Melody-themed Cafe. Here are 20 new cafes and restaurants worth visiting this June:

There’s no chance of missing this cafe when you’re in Bugis since the storefront is all splashed out in vibrant yellow, with “Earlybird” in neon lights. The inside is just as cheery, with yellow stools and bird murals. And that’s why it comes as no surprise that this cafe’s all about the chicken – fried chicken, poached eggs, and all.

Try their Chicken & Pancakes ($19) for a Southern-style rendition of fried chicken, served over buttermilk pancakes. Their Crumbed Eggs on Toast ($18) look just as tasty, with pulled pork and lightly-fried, breaded eggs which once prodded, will reveal a runny yolk.

Japan’s My Melody Cafe will soon be making its way down to Singapore.

Sanrio fans will be overjoyed when My Melody Cafe opens – it’s been designed with white rabbit My Melo in mind. Ambience-wise, the cafe looks like an al fresco garden so there’ll be plenty of cottage-like decor.

Try the Princess Bunny ($18.90) Japanese curry rice, tinted pink with beetroot and served with crispy chicken karaage. Other dishes will also follow the same theme, like the Merry-Donut-Go-Round ($12.90), a pastel pink strawberry milkshake, and Treasures of Maryland ($19.50) which is a stacked plate of toast and strawberries.

Lobster rolls don’t come cheap, but at Chunky Lobsters, they’re fairly priced at $16, with huge chunks of fresh lobster meat. Choose from 3 different types: Chunky’s Original is sauced with mayo and lemon, Chunky’s Connecticut comes with melted butter, and Chunky’s Cheesy has cheese all over.

Clan Cafe’s a beaut, especially with their light-filled space and Peranakan tiles. But we didn’t expect any less, since they’re run by the same people behind The White Rabbit and Odette.

There’s a large communal table that makes it easy for groups to order dishes to share. Brunch is available till 6PM here – some options include their Otah Sandwich ($16), which comes with a generous amount of mackerel and prawn between buttered brioche, or their Avocado Toast ($17) which has an oozy onsen egg on top.
They also serve up grain bowls, like Grilled Angus Ribeye ($19) and Miso Salmon ($17).

Of course it’s at Holland Village where you’ll be trying Dutch Fries – where else in Singapore would you be able to find golden brown frites with 12 different sauces? Straight from Holland, Martin Zwerts serves these fried potatoes in a cone doused in a load of sauce.

Their Signature Frites Sauce is a mix of white cream and brown curry sauce, scattered with diced onions. There’s also the choice of Sweet Chilli, Mustard, Meat, BBQ and plenty more. A cone starts from $6.50 for a small serve (200g).

Muyoo’s a new bubble tea joint serving up fruit teas and fruit smoothies. For a twist on flavours, opt for their Cheese Cloud Tea with a layer of savoury cheese froth, made with cheese powder from Holland and milk powder from New Zealand.
Tea traditionalists might prefer their drinks pure, and will enjoy Muyoo’s iced fruit tea. Their refreshing Peach + Calamansi + Passion Fruit Fun Fruit Tea ($4.10) is sure to hit the spot.

Good Old Days Bistro brings a throwback by being decked out in vintage goods – old radios, black and white framed photos, and even a menu that’s scrawled entirely in chalk on a blackboard. Some seats come with garden-like swings for you to sway back and forth on, to match the whimsical drawings on the wall.

Try one of their burgers for the novelty factor: both the Slow Cooked Pork Belly Burger ($13.90) and Crispy Oatmeal Chicken Burger ($13.90) are served in a vintage trunk with a generous serve of fries. The burgers are large so there’s a chance that bits will fall into the trunk – but don’t worry, it’ll be thoroughly covered in foil and paper so you won’t be leaving behind a mess.
They’ve got a hefty pasta selection too. Try their Shrimp and Squid Linguine ($14.90) and pair it with a fancy drink like Mango Delight with Mango Bits Cold Brew Tea ($7.50).

There’s nothing like biting into a pillowy doughnut – especially when it’s filled with generous dollops of filling. But doughnuts are slightly different at Japanese doughnut chain Haritts, where their doughnuts are said to have a dense texture, similar to both cake and bread with a slight chewiness.

Choose from 15 interesting flavours – there’s Matcha, Cranberry, Roasted Tea, and even Pumpkin. It’s a toss-up between their Earl Grey and Cream Cheese for us, but with prices starting from just $1.90, there’s no harm in getting both.

Cooked Japanese food has as much merit as sushi and sashimi, especially when it’s done as well as Deli’s Kitchen’s. It’s a no-frills set-up at Bencoolen, but it comes with a lengthy menu of grilled and roasted meats. Meat-lovers will enjoy the Wagyu Hamburg Steak Set ($19) that’s made out of 100% Japanese wagyu or the Roast Beef Don ($22) that comes with rare, tender slices of beef.

Their tonkatsu looks delish too, especially with choices like Kagoshima Aged Pork Loin Cutlet Set ($20) or the Iberian Aged Tenderloin Cutlet Set ($25). Deli’s Kitchen also serves Hakata Black Curry ($10 onwards), which is curry left overnight for a heartier taste.

The halal Mother Dough Bakery is the ideal space to while away your Sunday afternoons, with almond croissants ($3.20) larger than your face. They also have other confections that are just the right mix of flaky and buttery, with brioche, baguettes, and even cheddar chive loaves.

Those looking for something besides good ol’ plain bread will enjoy a Quiche ($5) which comes with mushrooms, caramelised onions, tomatoes, chives, and cheddar. The coffee’s worth trying too, since they get their beans from Sarnies.

Da Shi Jia Big Prawn Mee along Killiney Road is a quaint coffee shop which serves up killer bowls of piping hot prawn mee. A bowl of prawn noodles here starts from $5.80, and you can pick from yellow noodles, bee hoon, and kway teow. Some of the dishes are pricier, but you can justify this with the massive size of their prawns.

As a new bar-grill at Sentosa Golf Club, Panamericana Singapore has sweeping sea and garden views. Sit back while you’re enjoying a cocktail or two at $18 each. If you’re going down in a bigger group, try the Panamericana Sangria or Tommy’s Margarita ($68) since they serve up to 8 people.

The next time you’ve got a gyoza craving, head down to Chao Chao Gyoza to try their Gyoza Platter ($12.90), with dumplings in 5 different flavours: shrimp, mushroom, cabbage, curry, and chilli. You’re meant to go start with the lightest (presumably cabbage) and work your way to the dark (curry).

It’s all about colour at Scissors Paper Stove, which has a zig-zag rainbow mural and pillows in every shade. They’ve got the cheery decor down pat – and we’ve no complaints about the presentation of food, since they’re serving Asian tapas in old-school ting kat tins.

Singapore now has a restaurant by 3 Michelin-starred chef Alvin Leung, and with a name like Forbidden Duck, there’s no prizes for guessing that their roasted duck is a star dish. Wrap their Signature Slow Roasted Duck ($88/whole) into a calamansi bun, and scatter some white onions, cucumber, and grated garlic for taste.

Took Lae Dee is known to be a 24-hour chain in Bangkok. It might not have the same opening hours here, but at least the prices are kept affordable ranging from $3.80 onwards. Their Pad Krapow ($3.80, $5/with egg) is worth heading down for, especially when it comes with tasty pork or chicken stir-fried with basil leaves.
Try other common Thai dishes like Pad Thai ($5) and Seafood Tom Yum Soup ($8), or dishes that are less commonly found – like Khao Kluk Kapi ($8.8) (fried rice with shrimp paste) or Rad Na ($5) (fried noodles with gravy).

Restaurant Ibid is founded by the winner of Masterchef Asia Woo Wai Leong, so we sure have high expectations. There’s no a la carte menu here, so you’ll have to order either the 4-course ($78), 6-course ($88), or 8-course ($118) tasting menus with petite servings of each dish.

All dishes have a mix of Chinese and Western influence – their lotus rice comes with a twist since it’s steamed with kelp and also has a seared slice of foie gras on top. Other dishes are just as unique, and will be plated prettily on plates too – look forward to soy milk ice cream, deconstructed tea egg, and spring onion shao bing (flatbread).
