Healthy desserts in Singapore

No meal is truly complete without dessert, but as much as that’s true, desserts have an unfortunate reputation for being the enemy of healthy living, often being packed with sugar and calories.

Luckily, cafe owners recognise that Singaporeans are getting health-conscious, and have adapted by offering healthier options. From cafes that specialise in acai bowls to surprisingly healthy soft serves, here’re 10 cafes to bring your #fitspo friends to.

1. All The Batter (near Upper Thomson)

Millennials rejoice because All The Batter is an all-avocado cafe! Discreetly tucked away behind Thomson Plaza, this quaint little spot offers a whole range of avocado desserts.

The star of the show here is clearly the moist Avocado Rhapsody Cake ($6.50). Made from ripened avocados, cream cheese, unrefined sugar and a fluffy cocoa cake layer, it’s hard to believe that this cake is low in sugar and is surprisingly diabetic-friendly.

2. Beriwell (near Katong Shopping Centre)

The first and only acai soft serve shop in Singapore! Image credit: @berriwell

Unlike the minimalist white-based aesthetics favoured by new cafes, Beriwell’s space is a splash of colour with its bright neon-esque palette and tropical tiki-bar themed decor. The atmosphere is matched by their desserts, colourful soft-serves and smoothie selections – a true gift for the ‘gram.

Their soft serves easily match the bright and cheery interiors. Image credits: @beriwell

We highly recommend getting The Twist ($9.90, large), a delightfully-balanced combination of acai soft serve and the pastel blue Coco Majik, made from spirulina and coconut water. Add some crunch with the granola and cookie toppings or go the healthy route with healthy cut fruit options.

With 3 stores in town, Haakon Superfoods & Juice provides the perfect post lunch/dinner treat. The acai bowls come with a medley of diced seasonal fruits which include dragon fruit, mango & kiwis. Their use of fruits also means natural sugars are used instead of artificial additives – score!

Chocolate lovers have the option of Cacao Bliss Acai Bowls, made with almond butter and cacao. And for the siao on ones, opt for the Green & Lean Bowl. Their spirulina and spinach base means even less calories!

Don’t miss the Mudpie Ice-cream Cake ($9) too, with its decadent combination of French Chocolate and Hazelnut Chocolate ice-cream over a crisp brown rice base. This is then topped with crunchy walnuts and dark chocolate drizzle.

5. Real Food (Orchard Central)

The atmosphere is calming and inviting, reminiscent of a minimalistic Scandinavian living space. Image credit: Real Food

Apart from their mains, vegetarian restaurant Real Food serves wonderfully healthy and light desserts – with the sugar levels kept to a minimum.

Matcha Tiramisu ($8.50). Image credit: Real Food

A customer’s favourite is their Matcha Tiramisu. This wonderfully creamy dessert is layered with a soft spongy cake and is not too sweet. It’s lightly sweetened with cane and agave sugar. Agave sugar has a lower glycemic index than regular sugar which means it has a lower tendency to raise blood sugar levels. In simple terms, it’s healthier, so keep calm and carry on 😉

Other healthy dessert options include the Mango Cheesecake ($8.50) and the moist Vegan Gateau Chocolate cake ($8.50). The dessert selection here changes fairly frequently, so we recommend calling to check before making a trip down.

With names such as Mud Fudge and Chocolate Cheesecake, Delcie’s selection will have you astonished at the fact that such drool-worthy cakes can be so low in sugar yet taste so good. The trick behind this is a clever combination of 3 cane sugar alternatives: organic stevia, coconut sugar and agave, all of which have low glycemic indexes.

Cakes by the slice here start from $7.80, while prices for a 5-inch round cake start from $60.
