They’ve also got a nourishing Tsuya Tsuya Treatment specifically developed to combat Singapore’s sky-high humidity levels which leads to frizz and damage. No better time to treat your tresses to some TLC, especially with their discounted prices and free take-home products.
Michaela’s salon staff body comprises well-trained Japanese hairstyling professionals with years of experience under their belt. Plus, take a quick gander and you’d realise they’re all pretty stylo-Milo and have got their personal aesthetics down pat. This gave me more confidence to trust their recommendations as they guided me through which cuts and curl styles would best suit my face shape.
After a quick trim, I was escorted to their spacious hair-washing zone where I laid back in their automated reclining chairs and got tucked into a cosy blanket.
A towel will be placed around the face, shielding your eyes so you can have a quick snooze.
The hair wash and massage were thoroughly enjoyable, but cleansing and relaxation are not all there is to it. This is also the stage where the staff begin prepping your locks for the perm, first by spritzing a keratin spray which opens up your hair cuticles and deeply strengthens from root to tip.
Hair is steamed for 5 minutes to lock in all the keratin goodness
Next up, a thick and highly concentrated keratin cream is applied to my hair. It’s then sealed with a layer of cling film while a rotating heat lamp swirls above my noggin and aids penetration of the protein-packed formula.
It’s clear from all these extra steps that, on top of just providing an aesthetic transformation service, the salon actually ensures that past damage is treated and further damage is prevented. After all, your perm will only look as good as the health and condition of your hair allows.
Time for the magic to happen! Sections of hair are meticulously rolled up into heating coils. Because I’ve opted for a softer, layered look to complement my face shape and give my hair a much-needed volume boost, the coils only go up about three-quarters the length of my hair – not all the way to the scalp.
Thereafter, the heating magic does its thing while I kick back and chill. The Michaela Signature Perm uses a soft and gentle warmth of just 50°C, whereas many traditional perm salons can crank the heat up to 100°C and above to create curls that are stiff to the touch and artificial in appearance.
There’s also a much shorter duration involved, with just 7 minutes of heat application followed by 7 minutes of cooling to set the curls. A lot more tolerable and convenient than dedicating hours of your day just stuck in a salon chair!
From flat and lifeless to bouncy waves
The struggle of dolling up and achieving the perfect hairstyle only to have Singapore’s notorious humidity attack it with frizz is all too real.
Hair Salon Tokyo Michaela offers the Tsuya Tsuya hair treatment which was developed to nip this issue in the bud, ensuring smooth and luscious locks while you’re out and about that won’t become tangled and unruly even after a long day.
Ditching harsh chemicals for an arsenal of science-based products combined with non-heat-damaging tools, the treatment makes use of fast-absorbing ionised formulas to repair hair from within.
This high-tech gadget delivers 37,000 supersonic vibrations per second to your hair to naturally stimulate cell turnover and healthy regrowth. The process is then concluded with the application of an atomised treatment solution which contains nourishing proteins as well as hair lipids which strengthen each strand.
Well-lit and spacious, Hair Salon Tokyo Michaela provides a relaxing pamper sesh and makeover at Riverside Point.
Find it right smack in the middle of Clarke Quay and Fort Canning MRT stations – away from the crazy town crowds.
