Chocolate – every girl’s staple on their periods, every boyfriend’s saviour during Valentines Day, and everyone’s go-to for a dessert. We just can’t get enough of it. But with the overwhelming ubiquity of this popular dessert, the problem is no longer how to get it, but where we can lay our paws on the cream of the crop.
Being an ardent chocolate-lover, I more than willingly embarked on a mission to uncover the best chocolate desserts in town. The outcome? An ailing throat and expanded waistline, as well as a compilation of the 15 best chocolate desserts in our island home.
A split second after biting into the crispy baguette crust of the Chocolate Baguette Lava, warm chocolate lava oozed into my mouth. The chocolate lava was rich, velvety, and smooth – an absolute masterclass presented by the humble Mr Baguette.
The baguette coating was equally as good – hard on the outside but soft and fluffy once bitten into. The hardened molten chocolate above the baguette adds a punch to the baguette, giving it an extra crunch and chocolatey flavour.

Chocolate cupcakes these days are a dime a dozen, but this only decreases the probability of sinking your teeth into a delicious, mouth watering cupcake. Many are either too dry, too hard or too sweet. The Dark Chocolate Ganache from Plain Vanilla is free of the above charges and in fact, has a perfectly fluffy cake sandwiched between light layers of cream. It’s chocolate base is also generously topped with a rich glaze and cocoa nibs.

This no-frills dark chocolate lava cake is Matt’s The Chocolate Shop signature dish. Topped with a decadent chocolate ganache, the lava cake is neither too sweet or bland and the flavour of cocoa is intensely rich. Its texture is on pointe as well – crumbly, but does not collapse when sliced. The best way to eat it is heating it up first!

For only $5, Chocolate Origin’s Molten Lava Cake gives you the best of both worlds – Lava cake AND Vanilla ice cream, all in one cutesy cup. The Lava Cake is hard on the outside and the melted chocolate never fails to ooze out once sliced. This is probably the best item on Wimbly Lu’s menu. The filling of the Nutella Chocolate Pie is moist and dense – so much so that it felt like I was eating fudge instead. Its crust was simply spectacular – a distinct butter taste yet not overpowering and complements the chocolate filling perfectly.
At $6 for a relatively large slice of chocolate pie, you truly get a bang for your buck. In fact, it was so filling that I had troubles finishing it and had to share it with my friend!

To all you gluten intolerant folks out there, fret not. Awfully Chocolate’s Flourless Cake tastes even better than cakes that are made with flour. It is dense with a crackly crispy top that gives different textures to the cake. Made with homemade chocolate, this flourless variant still packs that unique Awfully Chocolate punch!

Triple Chocolate Devil contains 66% Valrhona dark chocolate mousse, and is coated with a layer of Valrhona dark chocolate ganache that is infused with Belgium Chocolate Baileys. To save you from a chocolate overdose, a tart raspberry jelly provides balance amongst a sea of chocolate. The result is absolutely beautiful.

Cocoa Bolas are delicious balls of crispy biscuit crusts coated with layers of rich cocoa cream. Salted biscuit and bittersweet chocolate coating complement each other perfectly, and the accompanying chocolate sauce adds an extra punch to the dessert. The traditional way of consuming a Cocoa Bola is by first smashing it with a wooden hammer which symbolizes the “breaking of one’s bad fortune” – the perfect reason to head to Cocoa Colony after a bad day at work!

At $8 per cone, Godiva’s soft serve is easily the most expensive ice cream in town. But if you have a hankering for chocolate ice cream and feel exceptionally wealthy, then you’d want to lay your hands on this sweet treat. The soft serve has a consistent creaminess while the cone is crunchy. Drizzled with chocolate sauce, the chocolate used is of high quality and stole the show. Available in white chocolate as well, buy it at Changi Airport (Terminal 2 Departure Hall) for only $7.50! Bless you, GST absorption!

Cream & Custard’s second entry on this list might seem like an ordinary chocolate ball, but melting the chocolate sphere reveals something even tastier – crunchy butter crumbles, passion fruit curd, chocolate mousse and sponge cake. The zesty passion fruit curd balances the heavy taste of chocolate and adds a refreshing element to the dessert.

This is perhaps the coolest pizza in town. Pepperoni and ham are so yesterday – marshmallows and chocolate on pizzas are the new in-thing. A thin salted crust, decadent layer of dark chocolate base, topped with fluffy marshmallows are all you need to have a mouth-gasm.

Made with 3 different types of cocoa, Angelina’s hot chocolate is easily the best of its kind. It is served in an elegant pitcher alongside a slab of whipped cream and the hot chocolate is so rich and velvety, that one is recommended to take sips and not gulps lest you get too heaty.

Death by Chocolate Cake lives up to it’s name, with most of the flavours coming from the generous melted chocolate ganache sandwiched between each layer of cake. Chocolate cake’s best bud, vanilla ice cream is also around to save you from any feelings of jelat-ness – the ice cream here has a tinge of mint and adds a refreshing element.

Apart from being physically appealing, Non Entrée’s Chocolate Avalanche is also a delight to the taste buds. Lava cake is warmed thoroughly and placed on top of a what seems to be a fish bowl – when sliced, the viscous lava oozes tantalizingly into the vanilla ice cream. The biscuit sandwiched in between adds a subtle savoury flavour to the dessert. $13.90 might sound kinda steep, but you get a cool experience and pretty pictures too!
