We’ve got some good news to start your February. Cats the Musical is coming back to Singapore this October, after 7 long years. And the Jellicle Cats will be prancing about and belting your fave tunes at the same place: Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands.
Whether you’re thinking “huh, what is Cats sia?” or getting your fave merch out, here’s all you need to know about this upcoming theatrical run.

First, let us give you a TLDR on Cats the Musical. It’s one of the longest-running Broadway musicals, first premiered in London in 1981. Cats the Musical has been shown in 30 different countries, including successful runs in Singapore in 2019, 2015, 2009, and 1993.
It is based on an old poetry collection by English poet T.S. Eliot called Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. And by old, we mean it was published in 1939.

This musical is so popular that, even if you’re not a theatre kinda person, you’ve probably heard the song Memory before. In fact, the music is by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, who also did The Phantom of the Opera. Yup, he’s a pretty big deal.
Yes, that’s Tay Tay as Bombalurina.

There has also been a 2019 film adaptation of Cats featuring Taylor Swift, Idris Alba, Rebel Wilson, and Judi Dench, among others. But the movie apparently flopped so hard it was meme-ed all over social media that year.

Cats the Musical runs for 2 hours and 20 minutes, including a 20-minute interval. It’s set on a very special night of the year, the annual Jellicle Ball. Imagine a Bridgerton-esque ball, but full of felines. The musical starts with a high-energy light show, followed by an introduction to the kitties, also known as the Jellicle Cats.

Cats the Musical is full of surprises, but we won’t spoil it for you. But expect lots of singing, prancing, meowing, and audience interaction. You’ll feel like you’re at the Jellical Ball, too.
