What to prepare when attending career fairs

  1. Do your homework: Check out which companies will be there and the roles they’re offering. Being prepared is important and having a clear idea of what to expect on the day itself will make the process less overwhelming. Prioritise visiting your identified booths first when you arrive as queues might build later on in the day.
  2. Dress the part: First impressions matter, so dress professionally and carry yourself with confidence. Employers want to see you in the role you are applying for – be honest, enthusiastic, and ready to sell your strengths.
  3. Bring the necessary documents: Have printed copies of your resume on hand and be prepared for impromptu interviews. Practise answering common questions to ensure you don’t get caught off guard. Think about your experience and what has the most relevance to the job you’re interested in. That can be a point to highlight to let the interviewer know you would be a great match for the role.
  4. Come with your own questions: Find out what it’s like to work at the company – what they look for in a candidate, career progression, and workplace culture. This will give you insight into whether your research thus far is useful and might help you decide whether the job is a right fit for you.
  5. Take notes: Keep track of important details like contact info, job scopes, and salary ranges. Not only does this help you compare options later, but it also demonstrates your enthusiasm about the opportunity. Plus, you won’t have to ask the same questions twice.
  6. Network: Attend any networking events, workshops, or talks, as this gives you the opportunity to mingle with industry players and possibly exchange contacts.
