Cake Love – A retro-themed Halal café participating in Cafefest 2014

About Cake Love

Cake Love is a retro-themed Halal café that is brimming with inspiration. From the thoughtful menu to the absolutely hipster interior design, it presents itself as nothing but promising. The owner was first inspired to craft a career in cakes during her college days in Australia. Her stunning portfolio is indubitably evident of dedication, expertise, and genuine passion.

The quirky café boasts a modest seating capacity of about 20, and prides themselves on the array of baked goods served fresh daily. Their cake selections are on a rotational basis, so do call in for inquiries to prevent disappointments.

The Desserts at Cake Love

Cake Love’s rendition of the Chocolate Cheesecake ($6.50) was pleasant, but not quite a winner. The generous slice of cheesecake was smooth and creamy with the right dose of cocoa essence, but it wasn’t exceptionally delectable. Nonetheless the Oreo crust might win some hearts – it was probably the best part of it.

The appealing selection of Macarons available did not fail to deliver as Cake Love’s signature dessert choice, with its melt-in-the-mouth perfection and the laudable mastery of flavour balance. The Salted Caramel Macaron ($2.20) had a briny burst of cream which dissolved into a buttery aftertaste. I loved that all the Macarons’ cookie-to-filling ratio was just right and the cookie’s texture beneath the crust hit the right note of chewiness.

Unlike the unremarkable Crunchy Chocolate Macaron, the Red Velvet Macaron stood out with its chocolate cream centre, encircled by the classic cream cheese filling. The latter is characteristic of Red Velvet, but the chocolate core scored with its subtle enhancement of the hint of cocoa.

The Lemon Pie ($6.80) was crusted blandly with a drop of whipped cream atop a thin layer of lemon custard. Although the lemon tang was just right, it failed to stand out due to its lack of texture. It might appeal to those who love a cakey base, but I would prefer my pie to have a distinct, mealy crust.

The Drinks at Cake Love

Bursting with a medley of flavors, this refreshing Minty Green Italian Apple Soda ($5.50) pleased every bit of my weary soul. It was cooling, minty and apple sweet all at once, leaving me overwhelmed with how much a mouthful of this thirst-quencher could offer.

I especially love how it was an excellent accompanying drink to clear my palate for more cakes, jolting my senses each time with its fizziness. Don’t you love how retro it looks as well?

As a tea lover, I’m clueless about coffee. Think coffee and I will utter descriptives like bitter and strong, not quite the complete picture because I realized how good a Latte could taste with the right proportion of milk.

The Iced Latte ($5) here is silky smooth and definitely not overpowering. The enticing vanilla-like flavor was a sneaky contestant, and I ended up taking more sips than I would expect. This very drinkable cup of Latte would probably sit with you till the end of your meal.

Thick and frosty, the Strawberry Milkshake ($7.40) will satisfy the kid in you. The portion served is good to share for two, and it lives up to the luscious milkshake legend. Imagine drawing in a heaven of velvet strawberry goodness, I would think it goes well with some burger and fries – which by the way, is available in the Hot food menu!

Cake Love Verdict

Cake Love’s star is rising in the growing Singapore café community. It provides an expanding menu that caters extensively and continually improves with customer feedback. What we have listed is just the tip of the iceberg, and we’ve excluded a few other signatures that caught our eye.

Nevertheless, with the skills and experience in hand, Cake Love is definitely a dessert haunt that should be on your list of cafés to visit.
