No matter how delicious or satisfying the mains are, no Christmas dinner party is complete without some log cake. After all, there are only so few days in the year we get a free pass to feast or truly indulge.

If you’ve always had the impression that yule logs were meant to look like, well – logs, Executive Pastry Chef Sebastien Cocquery-Beraud and the award-winning culinary team at Fairmont Singapore and Swissotel The Stamford are here to prove you wrong. Here are 6 yule logs so beautiful you’ll have to think twice before you dig in.

1. Lemon and Hazelnut Yule Log – for a mild citrus flavour

Just because this cake is brown doesn’t mean it’s coffee or chocolate-flavoured. So don’t be fooled by the exterior of this yule log – it’s actually filled with lemon mousse, crunchy hazelnut and praline.

The Lemon and Hazelnut Yule Log is crafted to resemble snowy peaks and frosty temperatures – things we in Singapore #cannotrelate to.

Price: $43/ $73 (0.5kg/ 1kg)

2. Santa’s Yule Log – for the health-conscious foodie

Your fitspo friends might be swearing off all things sweet this festive season, but there’s no need to take measures as drastic with Santa’s Yule Log – all the goodness of a Christmas log cake with half the calories.

With a striking red glaze that will draw your guests’ attention, The gluten-free Santa’s Yule Log is made from alternate, jelly-like layers of coconut dacquoise and pistachio creme, as well as a flourless sponge cake. The layers are paired with strawberry mousse, giving an overall fruity taste with a mix of sweet and sour flavours.

This cake was our favorite of all the others, and is so good even Santa will approve.

Price: $43/ $73 (0.5kg/ 1kg)

3. Perigord’s Black Forest Yule Log – a contemporary twist on log cakes

The jaw-dropping Perigord’s Black Forest Yule Log is shaped nothing like a log, but a futuristic sphere similar to a giant Crystal Ball. Glistening with sparkling cherry glaze, the dark chocolate mousse cake sits atop a cocoa butter base, with a ring of purple sponge “fluff” around the diameter.

Upon unboxing the cake, we could smell the intensity of the chocolate even from 20 feet away. The cake also tastes as good as it smells, with a blend of sweet and bitter flavours from the chocolate mousse and chocolate butter. While it didn’t ooze like we’d expect from a big ball of chocolate, the cake will satisfy your sweet tooth.

Price: $73 (1kg)

4. Espresso Chest – for coffee enthusiasts

Another cake too pretty to eat, is the Espresso Chest – a pirate treasure chest filled with life’s greatest treasure (to many) – coffee!

Made from roasted beans and almonds, the Espresso Chest has a slight bitter and nutty taste, and comes with a thin layer of spiced orange marmalade at the base for a hint of citrus. Sticking well to the treasure theme, the light-textured cake is also decorated with gold-coin chocolates and placed on top of nutty chocolate crumble.

Since it’s so heavily decorated, you can start by picking at the chocolate pieces before digging in.

Price: $43/ $73 (0.5kg/ 1kg)

5. Traditional Vanilla & Chestnut Yule Log – for vanilla lovers

There’s a reason why the Traditional Vanilla & Chestnut Yule Log is white, as it’s made to resemble the bark of snow-covered winter chestnut trees in France. Made from rolls of chestnut and vanilla cream, the cake also has an essence of aged rum for that added Christmas cheer.

Price: $43/ $73 (0.5kg/ 1kg)

6. Spiced Orange Caramel Gateaux – for those who prefer cakes that are less dense

Out of all the Festive Cakes, the Spiced Orange Caramel Gateaux actually looks the most like a real log! Spiced with orange marmalade and caramel cremeux, it is silky and smooth on the plate, and topped with chocolate pieces that look like loose branches and leaves.

This light and fluffy sponge cake is also the right way to end a heavy Christmas meal!

Price: $35/ $67 (0.5kg/ 1kg)

Bonus: Santa’s Velvet Robe – for red-velvet fans

Just like Mariah Carey’s mega carol covers, the timeless and classic red velvet cake is back once again this Christmas season. And while the Santa’s Velvet Robe isn’t a yule log, it definitely deserves a spot on your dinner table with its hot pink glaze that makes it look like a sleek Christmas wreath.

If you love creamy desserts, this will satisfy your cravings with layers of red velvet cake and cream cheese.

Price: $37 (0.5kg)
