alice + olivia by Stacey Bendet spreads a message of kindness

About alice + olivia by Stacey Bendet

I felt like Alice stepping into Wonderland as I explored the alice + olivia store in Ion, a Hollywood favourite that finally opened its doors in Singapore this year. We were welcomed by black and white marble flooring, ornate gold mirrors and the odd mismatched green sofa. It’s funny though – the crazy colours and the mash of modern and luxe are a marriage made in fashion heaven.

This is the secret of alice + olivia’s popularity with Hollywood nobility like Gwyneth Paltrow and Katy Perry. In the words of its founder, alice + olivia is for the grown woman with a little girl inside. It is playful, colourful and whimsical – but manages to stay sophisticated.

alice + olivia’s designer is named neither Alice nor Olivia. She’s Stacey Bendet, who started theto create the perfect pair of pants. The brand has since grown from a collection of pants into a full lifestyle collection.

You’ll find a good mix of pretty meets preppy pieces – red tulle dresses with embroidered lippies, pleated skirts with flamingo prints, and even kooky “Stacey face” pumps.

The Kindness Project

Stacey Bendet’s kindness project is the label’s effort to spread messages of love and positivity around the world. At their launch party last Friday, guests were invited to send messages of kindness to the beneficiaries of the Fairy Godparent Programme. A family-support initiative for the children of ex-offenders, this programme provides mentoring and tutoring services for its beneficiaries.

Guests were invited to pen some words of kindness to the children. We then hung these messages on a tree at the front of the shop. Knowing that the child I was writing to had dreams and aspirations just like I do gave me a powerful sense of connection to an otherwise faceless stranger. I’m sure many of the other guests were also moved by the thoughtfulness of this simple gesture.

We spotted some familiar faces, like local actress Patricia Mok, Lush 99.5fm presenter Tracy Philips, MTV Asia VJ Hanli Hoefer, and Sheila Sim, one of the top models in Singapore.

Our favourite picks at alice + olivia

We loved the bold Pout Collared Dress with its embroidered red lippies on a full tulle skirt. It’s just the right balance of quirky and feminine. This versatile statement piece can take you from a casual dinner date to prom night.

Our favourite pick had to be the Foss Fitted Bodice Dress. This pretty floral brocade piece is a head turner with its flashy metallic finish – but the fit and flare silhouette keeps things classy. The mesh cutout back sealed the deal for me. Subtly sexy and unexpected, the bare back is a welcome surprise.

alice + olivia is now just two months old. If you’re keen to check out their clothing range and kindness project, you can head down to their very first Singapore store at ION Orchard.
