About 1 Market
Note: As of June 2016, 1 Market is now closed.
Popular Malaysian celebrity chef, Chef Wan, unites local delights from all over Asia in 1 Market, a halal buffet restaurant on the 4th floor of Plaza Singapura. 1 Market offers a diverse range of food from Malaysia to the Middle East – all specially concocted based on Chef Wan’s recipes.
In celebration of Chinese New Year, there are special additions to their buffet menu. Look forward to 1 Market’s iterations of Chinese New Year goodies, steamboat and Yu Sheng to usher in joy and prosperity with friends and family over the festive season.
The Buffet At 1 Market
I’d never been to 1 Market before, so I was excited to hit the buffet table. The options are virtually limitless – you need four stomachs to be able to try everything. As the dinner crowd started pouring in, one of the most popular stations was the grill section. The grilled chicken is tender and aromatic. You’re provided with a variety of sauces, but I recommend their specialty, the rendang sauce. It’s slightly spicy, but flavourful, and complements the grilled chicken well.
For those with small appetites, save half your stomach space for dessert! There’s something for everyone – from savoury local fruit rojak to a chocolate fondue fountain for the kid in all of us.
Yu Sheng At 1 Market
Huat ah! It’s long been a tradition to usher in good fortune in the new year by tossing yu sheng with family and friends. This year, we were treated to Chef Wan’s first-ever prosperity yu sheng, a new take on the traditional yu sheng. Instead of drizzling plum sauce over the rest of the ingredients, 1 Market uses Chef Wan’s special Thai sauce instead.
The result is a sweeter variation of the popular dish – suitable for people who like to get creative with food, but perhaps not so appealing to yu sheng traditionalists.
Steamboat At 1 Market
The most disappointing dish was the steamboat (extra $5 per pax). There was a decent selection of seafood, with crab, clams and prawns available, but otherwise, the range of steamboat options was limited.
We were offered two different broths – tom yam and chicken. I preferred the tom yam broth over the chicken broth as the chicken broth lacked a distinct chicken flavour. The tom yam was satisfyingly sour, but it needed a touch more spiciness to satisfy the Singaporean palate. However, I did feel that both choices were a tad too salty.
The Verdict
If you’re a fan of 1 Market, take note that their steamboat and Yu Sheng are festive specials only available till 5 March 2015. Add on $5 per pax to include steamboat in your buffet spread, or toss up some Yu Sheng for $38 (for 4-6 pax) to $48 (7-10 pax).
If you’re simply looking forward to 1 Market’s extensive buffet spread, Chinese New Year goodies like their homemade pineapple tarts are included at no extra cost. Personally, I found the food satisfactory, but not very value-for-money.
