Scalp Purifying Treatment that works
Hands up if you had an oily scalp that was the bane of your early adult years and it never went away. Raise your other hand if you’ve gone down the #HairTok rabbit hole of #greasyhairhacks. I empathise, because I’ve been there, with short-lived success. Here’s what I tried, and what finally gave me grease-free hair – the clean feeling lasting days after my Scalp Purifying Treatment.
TikTok hacks that I tried for greasy hair
Before I get to the good part – AKA the treatment that actually worked – here’s a lowdown of TikTok hacks I’ve tried over the past many years of being an oily scalp girlie.
To be clear, success to me is a scalp that doesn’t really grease up again in the days following the treatment. It’s the kind of clean, non-oily feeling that gives people the confidence to get away with washing their hair less often.
Teach your scalp to be less oily

This was one case where patience did me no favours – according to many a TikTok expert, washing your hair less is the key to “teaching” or “training” your scalp to produce less oil. According to the supposed science, you strip your hair and scalp of its natural oils every time you wash your hair, which triggers it to produce even more oil, leading to a vicious cycle of greasiness.
Maybe I didn’t persevere long enough or go all in and wait 3-4 days between washes to see results, but with Singapore’s humid and hot weather, I could not bring myself to go any longer than washing my hair once every 24 hours.
I even attempted this one cold, dry London winter – but my hair still felt too greasy by the end of day 2, with no signs of a less oily scalp after 1.5 weeks.
Verdict: Unpleasant experience, 10/10 would not recommend.
Dry shampoo immediately after hairwash
Then, according to the social media platform, spraying on dry shampoo immediately after your usual wash and dry helps to stretch out the duration for which your scalp feels oil-free. The logic: get a headstart on the oil.
Try it, I did. Like it, I did not. It felt counterintuitive to be spraying product back onto my freshly cleaned scalp. Yes, my hair didn’t look like it needed a wash. But it felt like my scalp and hair were coated in product. I might be exaggerating, but I was convinced my scalp couldn’t breathe, so I wound up washing it all out anyway.
Verdict: Give it a try if you don’t mind feeling like your scalp can’t breathe.
Micellar water & blow dry

More recently, derms and hair gurus on TikTok have raved about the efficacy of micellar water to cleanse oily scalps between washes. The logic is sound enough – the gentle cleansing liquid is commonly used to get your makeup off, so it should work to wipe off any oil and dirt on your scalp too. Simply saturate a cotton pad with your choice of micellar water, rub it on your scalp, then blow dry your hair for instant, non-greasy volume.
Perhaps the cleanse was too gentle, or Singapore’s weather is just too swelteringly hot, but the improvement I saw was rather short-lived. Before I had made it onto the bus just 3 minutes from home, the volume was gone, and my roots and scalp were back to feeling oily.
To give credit where credit is due, there was truly a short while where my scalp did feel clean, with the light wipe and blowdry.
Verdict: A very temporary fix, and you’ll need to have the full works ready – a hairdryer, micellar water, and cotton pads.
Going for a Scalp Purifying Treatment at TK TrichoKare

Call me a sceptic, but I wasn’t completely sure that going for a Scalp Purifying Treatment was the answer to my woes. Sure, haircare centres have fancy-schmancy high tech equipment and products, but they’re also known to encourage you to sign up for treatment packages.
But there’s a first for everything, and the $48 nett promo that TK TrichoKare was running for its award-winning Scalp Purifying Treatment made it palatable enough for me to try.

To start off, I met one of TK TrichoKare’s specially trained hair consultants, who did a Pre-Treatment Hair and Scalp Scan Analysis for me. There’s no hiding here – every clogged pore, empty follicle and nasty sebaceous gland was on full display.

Step 1: A Customised European Herbal Scalp Masque, was applied to eliminate excess sebum and clogged pores, while nourishing the scalp with the European herbal ingredients in its formula. As its name suggests, it’s fully customised, so it was tailored to the exact needs of my scalp.

Then came an invigorating hair wash with their best-selling Nourishing Hair Bath shampoo, accompanied by an ultra comfortable aromatherapy head massage for better blood circulation on the scalp.

Next up, a ScalpBoost Ampoule was sprayed onto my scalp with a NanoMist Spray, which increased the absorption rate of this scalp-nourishing essence, designed to strengthen hair growth.

The final step was a 20-minute stint under the Hair Bang, a low level light therapy device that helps to maintain the scalp’s PH balance. This was also meant to improve blood circulation on my scalp for better hair and scalp health.

I physically felt like my head and scalp had been super thoroughly cleansed and massaged, and the Post-Treatment Scalp Scan Analysis proved that the treatment had accomplished what it claimed it would. The redness on my scalp had calmed, clogged pores were cleared of oil and bits of dead skin had been vanquished – benefits which would promote hair growth too.

Of course, doing this just once would not lead to long-term improved scalp health – consistent, routine treatments would be necessary to help my scalp regulate itself. But one thing the consultant told me stood out: less frequent hair washes definitely do not make my scalp less oily. Good riddance, TikTok hair hacks.

To top it off, I was given a free set of TrichoKare’s Hair Care Kit, which included the Nourishing Hair Bath shampoo and CompleteKare Mask conditioner, both of which were used during my treatment. These in-house formulas, made with European botanical ingredients that promise only good things for scalp and hair, are meant to complement the treatments you get in the hands of the hair specialists at TK TrichoKare.
