Skincare 101 with Cetaphil

Shopping for skincare products can be a bewildering experience. Does having shea butter in my lotion really make a difference? Why does this tiny jar of face cream cost $70? And do I really need six different jars and tubes of stuff for my face?

My colleague Symone recently went to Bali for the Cetaphil Experience, and she found out loads of tips that only skincare experts can give, making getting healthy, happy skin a far less harrowing experience. We had some misconceptions about skincare cleared up for us, and good things ought to be shared.

Here are 6 tips we learnt from the Cetaphil Experience that will help you become far more skin confident.

1. Expensive products might increase the chance of breakouts

We often think that the more expensive a product is, the better it will be. However, that’s not always the case. As a matter of fact, sometimes, the more affordable the product is, the better! Skincare products which have fewer ingredients reduce the likelihood that one of them will end up leading to breakouts and pimples spreading across your face.

2. Few anti-ageing cosmetic products actually work

Here’s the thing: most anti-ageing cosmetic products don’t reeeeally stop premature ageing. Most of the time, these products just conceal and fill in any wrinkles and lines, as opposed to actually preventing them from forming.

The only real proven way to prevent these lines from forming is simply to use sunscreen – so make sure you apply sunscreen before leaving the house!

3. Even oily skin needs moisturiser

Many problems in life can be solved with moisturiser. It prevents lines from forming, keeps your skin from drying out and getting itchy, and keeps you looking fresh.

Even if you’ve got oily skin and think you don’t need any more moisture on your face, think again. Some skincare experts say that moisturising your face tricks your skin into thinking it’s produced enough oil, and so it winds up producing less – which results in an overall decrease in how often your face feels like an oil slick.

4. Know what goes into your products

Understanding what kind of skin you have, and knowing what goes into your products, can make all the difference between clear skin and having a flaming pimple on your face. You don’t really need a complicated routine if you’ve got the right products – just a face wash, moisturiser and sunscreen will do.

Try to avoid buying products that contain fragrance and sodium lauryl sulfate, especially if you have sensitive skin – these could  lead to skin irritation, which as we all know is Not Fun. Also, keep a lookout for products that are non-comedogenic, which avoids the formation of blackheads, and those that use natural oils like shea butter and nut oils, which are super moisturising.

5. Pay extra attention to your neck and hands

It’s all very well and good to take care of your face, but your neck and hands are a dead giveaway of your age. Fine lines can start forming on your neck when you’re in your twenties if you’re not careful as well, so be sure to moisturise and take care of them.

Remember, it’s never too early to start – just a bit of lotion on your neck and hands every day can make a world of difference ten years down the line.

6. Air con could be your skin’s #1 problem

You may think that all your skincare woes are due to personal factors – too much fried chicken, staying up late, getting stressed at work… all the usual culprits.

However, there may be external factors at play that you don’t even think about – like air con. Air con dries your skin out, which leads to your skin producing more oil, resulting in “unexplained” breakouts.

Skin experts recommend applying moisturiser every morning. Otherwise, shop for skincare products that are rich in antioxidants and natural oils. Make sure they’re non-drying and cleansing as well, and that they balance out your skin’s pH levels – simple steps to keep your skin healthy and fresh.

Be a confident, radiant you!

Armed with all these nifty tips, you’re now a much savvier skincare shopper – which means that you’ll be able to make the best choice to ensure that your skin remains happy and healthy always.

Still, the huge variety of skincare products available boggles the mind, and it can be difficult to figure out where to start. If you’re looking for a good moisturiser that comes with SPF, give the Cetaphil UVA/UVB Defense SPF 50+ a shot.

Cetaphil’s products are rich in natural oils and free from ingredients that tend to irritate the skin. Using special formulation to lock in moisture and keep your skin baby-soft, it guarantees to leave you feeling fresh even if you’ve been sitting in an air-conditioned room all day.

It’s extremely versatile as well, and here’s the real cincher – it’s suitable for ALL skin types! Whether you have oily skin, dry skin or sensitive skin, the chances are that Cetaphil will work for you! Two of my colleagues in TSL have eczema, and they use the Restoraderm range of products under the Cetaphil line with no problem – which just goes to show how gentle their products are on the skin.
