Amputee veteran at COVID-19 security post
In an effort to contain COVID-19 and minimizing risks of inter-provincial infection, Vietnam’s authorities have set up security posts in multiple provinces to monitor people’s movements.
Many have volunteered to work at these security posts to contribute to the community. But while their spirits are all commendable, one particular volunteer – a 73-year-old veteran who lost a leg during the Vietnam War – has been earning respect from netizens for his dedication lately.
A wholesome heart despite physical limits

Mr. Nguyễn Văn Thạo, a war veteran living in the Kỳ Hà commune of Hà Tĩnh Province, joined the army in 1965 when he had just turned 18 to fight in the Vietnam War. Two years later, he suffered heavy injuries in a battle and had to have his left leg amputated. Afterwards, he was removed from the frontline and continued to perform support duties.

When the war was over, Mr. Thạo returned home and continued to lead a humble life, but his kind heart earned him the respect of his neighbors. Mr. Lê Văn Luyện, Chairman of Kỳ Hà Commune’s People Committee, told Dân Trí, “Whenever someone needs help, Uncle Thạo is there to lend a hand. Everyone around here loves and respects him so much.”

With such a will to help people in need, it is understandable that Mr. Thạo would not stand by and watch while Vietnam musters all available resources to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past few days, pictures of him working at a local COVID-19 security post have made headlines, earning respect from netizens.
Speaking of his deeds, the old soldier simply said, “I’m ready whenever my country needs me.”

Mr. Thạo’s story made headlines on multiple news sites, helping to promote the national effort to fend off the disease.

The elderly help combat COVID-19
Vietnamese citizens from all walks of life, from teenagers to the working class to the elderly, are all contributing to the fight against COVID-19 in their own ways.
It is thanks to this social unity that we have been able to keep the disease at bay, recording only 268 cases with no fatalities so far.
