When every Vietnamese citizen reaches 14, they are required to go to a local police station to apply for an ID card – a document that proves their person’s identity once they’ve come of age.
While the ID card application process might seem boring due to many hours of queuing for the process, it surely was full of fun for a young boy in this story.
On the day 14-year-old Trần Đình Núi went to the police station at the stroke of midnight to apply for an ID card, the police officers there sprung a cake on him to make his birthday special. Here’s how the touching surprise played out.
Trần Đình Núi, a 14-year-old Hà Tĩnh boy, went to the police station on 9th April to apply for an ID card. However, he was told that he was one day short of 14, the age for Vietnamese ID card eligibility, and that he should return after he’s fully reached 14.
On 10th April, Núi returned to the police station at 12AM, unaware that there was more than just an ID card awaiting him there.

Knowing that Núi would turn 14 at the stroke of midnight, the police officers there surprised him with a candle-lit cake and some birthday gifts.
There were some other residents queuing for their ID applications at that time, but they were willing to wait for a little while and gladly joined this lucky citizen in his surprise birthday party.

“The police officers helped me with my ID application and threw me a birthday party with a birthday cake. I was ecstatic and surprised,” Núi told Tuổi Trẻ.

You may be wondering why Núi was at the police post so late at night. The deadline for applying for ID cards is 1st July, and many Vietnamese citizens are hurrying to complete their applications. Plenty of police stations are seeing notoriously long queues all day long. Some police officers even prepare beds and blankets just in case applicants choose to camp overnight.
Most Vietnamese police officers are known for their disciplined or cold public images, but seeing them brightening up a young citizen’s day with a birthday cake has really made us go ‘awwww’.
Since not everyone has the chance to celebrate their birthday in a police station among total strangers, we love that they went the extra mile to make it a special one for him.
This is obviously not Núi’s first birthday party nor is it his last, but it will surely be one of his most memorable.
