Hanoi Residents Shiver As The Capital Experiences Cold Spell, Temps Predicted To Hit Under 10°C

Hanoi’s weather sees dropping temperatures as the year ends

With the new year around the corner, Hanoi’s weather is getting chillier day and night amid these bleak winter days.

If you’re visiting the capital, you might want to put on extra layers of furry coats in the next couple of days when hitting the streets, as the temperature is set to drop to the single digits in the evenings.

Temperatures in cities such as Hanoi, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son, Ha Giang, Tuyen Quang, and Lao Cai might be as low as 8-11°C, while temperatures in mountainous areas might drop to below 0°C, and come together with snowfall.

With the cold weather sticking around for weeks, many Hanoi residents have resorted to wearing raincoats to shield themselves from the wind and lighting fires on the streets to keep themselves warm.

How to protect your health in winter days

With a record-breaking cold wave sweeping across many parts of Northern Vietnam this week, we are more likely to fall sick.

As the air gets drier, our body temperatures tend to drop and our immune systems may suffer as a result. The lack of sunshine in the winter season can cause people to have lower levels of vitamin D, a vitamin crucial for keeping our immune systems working smoothly.

To prevent yourself from catching the cold, wash your hands often to reduce bacteria and virus transmission, stay active by working out for at least 15 minutes per day, eat healthy food that boosts your immune system, and get some sun whenever possible.

While drinking alcohol is a common way of keeping warm and cosy, as alcoholic drinks temporarily enlarge the blood vessels under your skin, this also drives away heat from your organs. We can consider bundling up rather than drinking to stay toasty.

Northern Vietnam and Hanoi’s weather struck by cold wave

With the arrival of a cold wave hitting much of Northern Vietnam this week and the level of humidity plummeting, many of us will face a higher chance of catching the cold or flu.

To avoid coughs and runny noses all winter long, dress in layers to keep your body cosy when hitting the road, exercise often, and eat immune-boosting foods such as eggs, ginger, citrus, and blueberries.
