COVID-19 in Vietnam, update on 19th May

4 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Vietnam yesterday evening, adding to the country’s total tally of 324 patients.

All of the new patients were imported cases who returned from abroad on flights and were quarantined upon arrival. In terms of public health, Vietnam is continuing on its streak of going 33 days without community transmissions.

Meanwhile, 3 previous patients who were receiving treatment at the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases in Hanoi were discharged yesterday, leaving Vietnam with 61 active cases.

2 of the new patients were attendants on a Vietnam Airlines flight which was bringing back Vietnamese citizens from Russia. After dropping off the passengers at the Vân Đồn International Airport in Quảng Ninh Province on 13th May, they, along with the rest of the crew, flew back to Hồ Chí Minh City, where they were quarantined. At the time of arrival, these 2 patients were both tested negative for COVID-19.

One of the two started showing symptoms of fever and was tested again on 17th May – and the test results came back positive. His roommate, who was also in quarantine, also tested positive for the virus the next day. They have now been moved to the Củ Chi Field Hospital for treatment.

Aside from the flight attendants, another 2 cases were reported yesterday, both of whom were passengers on a flight returning from the US on 16th May. They were quarantined immediately upon landing.

Yesterday, the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases in Hanoi also declared 3 more patients free of the coronavirus.

Two of these three are residents of the Hạ Lôi Hamlet in Mê Linh District, Hanoi, formerly a major COVID-19 cluster that was locked down in early April. They were hospitalized on the 10th and 13th of April respectively.

The other patient is a 22-year-old woman from the northern province of Bắc Giang. She had been studying in Japan before returning on the 22nd of April. She was immediately quarantined upon arrival and tested positive for COVID-19 two days later.

Now discharged from the hospital, all 3 patients will continue to be isolated for another 14 days for further monitoring.

With the latest numbers, Vietnam has 263 recoveries out of 324 COVID-19 cases, and 61 patients are still receiving treatment.

Vietnam’s COVID-19 update, 19th May

We are glad to see that Vietnam is not only keeping up the good work in containing COVID-19 domestically, but is also extending a helping hand to other countries. Hopefully, with our joint effort, this global pandemic will be over soon.

For now, let’s do our part by practicing good hygiene and wearing protective gear while going out.
