Founded by Ms. Jean Yip in 1982, the company (Jean Yip Hair Studio) started off from a then single outlet in Katong Plaza. Jean Yip Salon has since expanded to over 50 outlets island-wide, managing a strong and evolving team of over 600 creative hairstylists and professional beauty therapists. Today, the company has even expanded to Malaysia and Indonesia. Since inception, Jean Yip has gradually increased its range of services from hairdressing to beauty and slimming services to providing one-stop beauty services. Catering to the individual needs of everyone, Jean Yip aims to fulfill all your beauty wishes.
I had the experience of accompanying a friend when she went to do her haircut here. She ended up buying $500 worth of packages (hair treatment, hair cut etc) when she completely did not need those things. They just kept pulling a very long face, kept going on and on about the product and how purchasing a package was more worth it - till she finally caved and just let them talk her into blowing her hard-earned money on their "value for money" packages. I suppose this is how they ensure repeat business.
Everytime I tried to cut in, they would cut me off. Personally, I've only ever done a pedicure at the salon, but the prices are definitely steeper than what other nail salons are offering out there.
Definitely not a place I'd step back into given the chance.
Since the second visit onward, every visit to Jean Yip is a nightmare. The results were not satisfactory at all. My hair was still frizzy and fluffy after rebonding sessions. When I feedback to them, they told me it was because my hair was dry and damaged, so they kept pestering me to pay on top of my package to do hair treatment. After listening to them and paying more money, my hair was back to usual look after wash. Besides, they continuously pester me to sign up for more packages on top of the one that I was stuck with. I had to endure the whole few hours there and hoping the service end soon so that I can escape.
I never had such torturing and unsatisfied hairdressing experiences in my life before!
The worst happened recently when I went for my rebonding. On the next day after I washed my hair, I had a shock of my life when it was dried! One side of my hair looked damaged and frizzle while the other side was like normal rebonded hair. The bunch of hair protracted about one centimeter above the surface of the normal rebonded hair. No matter how I combed it, It didn't settle down like the rest.
I wrote in to Jean Yip with photos of my hair to request for refund of my remaining package. I totally lost confidence in Jean Yip and dread going back to them anymore. The management called me and asked me to go back to Junction 8 branch for remedies. As for my request of refund, she said the previous sessions that I had done with them need to be recalculated as the price listed at their store front (instead of the package's discounted price) and then pro rate to me the balance! I couldn't believe my ears. I didn't even ask for compensation for the damage on my hair and now I'm penalised for their mistake if I wish to get back my remaining unused money. Not to mention the additional time spent and further damage through more chemicals on my hair during the remedy.
She said the terms and conditions for refund are written on the receipts that they issued. I told her I was not informed of this when I signed on the receipt as I paid $3000 for my package. She said this is their practice and procedures for refunds. I questioned her on the fairness on me as a victim and she kept saying "this is the practice in the industry as other companies are doing the same".
I totally regretted signing up for the package. I think they are only interested in getting more people to sign up for packages and not keeping customers with them in the long term. I wonder how far they can go if they are not sincere in providing quality customer service in this service industry.
I went to Jean Yip pedicure and manicure section for eyebrow embroidery aim for the $388 but the "beautician-Kelly Zhao " tell me I mst pay $1200+ for fog eyebrows (粉黛眉）and I dare not go out cause she ruined my eyebrows one high one low, one normal and one too near to my nose and leave scar. She deny it's her work and said I request her do it that way, trying to contact her boss but gets no response. I am preparing to sue them, so upset.
From perusing reviews on their Facebook website, it seems as if people have had continued complaints about customer service and the unwarranted selling of products at exorbitant prices. I was surprised. Despite being a huge brand name that prides itself on being 'home-grown', and being located at many heartland malls, the staff seem to have no respect for their audience or customers.
I recall an experience when I wanted to do a simple hair treatment at the Thomson Plaza outlet. However, the man at the front staff recommended a more expensive treatment, claiming that it would be more long-lasting. The treatment was $150 more than what I originally intended, but I decided to give it a go.
My hair went back to its usual, frizzy quality immediately after I took a shower. The treatment left zero impact.
Yesterday, I had another encounter with Jean Yip which compelled me to write the below letter to the Marketing group:
"I would like to lodge a complaint about one of your front-facing staff. I did not manage to note down her name, but she had a pixie-cut, communicates to others in Mandarin and had silver circular earrings. She was on duty at the front counter at the Bedok outlet, 6.30pm on 29 December 2017. I brought my younger sister, who was in her school uniform, to the counter to help her get a haircut, and I wanted to check the prices. This lady was extremely unhelpful.
When I asked her if there was a rate for students, she literally scoffed at me and said, "what do you mean student price?" After which, she went back to looking down at her desk. What an unpleasant woman, and what an unfortunate experience. I expect your front-facing staff to be open to questions, and ready to provide factual information. In contrast, this lady's service was extremely disappointing, and she clearly passed unwarranted judgement on my sister and I. It sent out a message that I was not deserving of patronising Jean Yip Bedok for simply asking if there was a discounted rate for a student in uniform.
Discounted rates for students are available at many local leading hairstylists. I do not think that my question is invalid.
I would like to request that your front-facing service staff be less arrogant, just because your customers appear to be youthful, or do not seem to be purchasing your more expensive services. I firmly believe that this is NOT the right way to carry out customer service.
For such an established brand, I am immensely appalled by the service, will never patronise the Bedok branch again and will discourage all my peers and colleagues from doing so. Do note that I have never ever written such strong feedback, lest 30 minutes within the encounter. However, I feel extremely compelled to for this lady's pompous attitude.
I hope you accept this feedback to correct the actions of the aforementioned staff. A pompous attitude has no place at the front desk. Thank you for your time."
In conclusion, I would recommend everyone to stay away from this brand! Hope this helps you avoid an unpleasant experience with Jean Yip Singapore.
Note that the person called me on Saturday and thus I agreed to try out the facial on Tuesday. In the period of arranging the appointment to the actual day itself, Jean Yip had called four times and sent a confirmation message.
Being professional and sending out confirmation is one thing, and PASTERING is another thing.
If you don't mind being called up every single day, regardless of the time, this beauty salon may be suitable for you. However, if you are a lady who has a life and work, who do not wish to be reminded of your appointment as you are professional enough to jolt down your own schedule, STAY AWAY FROM THIS!
I was however gravely frustrated with the new version of chemical every hair salon seems to be using these days. It's supposedly more natural, but I have very frizzy and kinky hair. It didn't last 2 weeks before strands picked up from the floor shows zig-zags again. Went to Jean Yip hoping for better quality service, and was promised correction with package deal. Spent $560 but got the worst effect of all. Phoned Jean Yip headquarters because the head hairstylist couldn't fix it. But its administrator Steven Fernandez ignored me completely despite multiple follow ups. Other salons might fail as well, but at least they don't manipulate you into buying a package deal. Complete rip -off !
Thought I could at least leave feedback with Jean Yip herself pertaining to the new product being inferior to what she used to market. But there's no way to get to her, and Steve Fernandez is a dead end. I wouldn't have left a public review if they had taken customer feedback seriously.
If you have strong waves or kinky hair, go anywhere but Jean Yip.
Techically the consumer (i.e. me) is at fault too as "Caveat emptor" i should have defended myself against them and just be thick skinned and insist that i refuse to buy the package. However they kept upselling until I got fed up and caved in. Regretted it instantly but vowed never to visit Jean Yip again.
Once you sign up for the package, the room and service instantly degrades. Subsequent treatments: 1) Ushered into a room without even a cupboard or chair to put my bag/clothes 2) Do not serve tea 3) Service plain sucks and need to wait 4) They never got my name right. Not once. Their English is terrible and the staff can't pronounce my name correctly.
For that price of $800, I can go to a legit doctor for IPL for cheaper. Or, visit Musee Platinum who promises unlimited IPL and from what I heard carry out their promise. Moreover, the finishing of the salon is definitely not high quality - ikea lamp etc. and furnishing is cheap. Does not have a luxurious feel. If you are seeking a pampering experience, this is definitely not the place.
Terrible reputation from JEAN YIP - never trusting this brand again.
The hair treatment was a simple hair scalp treatment so there was nothing much to comment about
For my hair cut, they had the worse hair stylist you could ever find in such professional hair salon. Btw I went to the branch at NEX. Despite the high credentials of JY, their hair stylists do not even know what kind of hair styles suit what face shape. I asked for a recommendation and the hair stylist said that there was nothing much you could do for short hair. In the end I asked for a bob concave.
The bob concave was terribly done. I did not see any gradient in the job. In fact It looked like a straight bowl hair cut. And it was far toooo short to even look like a bob. TERRIBLE HAIR STYLE. When I told them that the hair was too short and there was no gradient, they started giving me all sorts of this excuses. Seriously shouldn't they just admit that their hair stylist is LOUSY.
Furthermore I had to the be one directing the stylist with what hair style. They have no idea what style to recommend and displayed poor knowledge and lack of experience.
I will never pay for their services again. Very bad experience. WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY. VERY DISAPPOINTING FOR SUCH A RENOWNED HAIR SALON.
But the skills and services of the hairdressers from different outlets of Jean Yip prove to be quite different. I think the service at the outlet at Clementi mall is ok but the skill of the hairdresser is just not good enough for me. What i need is just a hair cut for my medium length hair.
From this experience, i have decided to go back to the salon that i usually visit instead of trying out new salons for curiosity. Maybe you should think twice when you decide to do a hair cut at this outlet.
The skills of the hair stylists are also pretty commendable. I permed my hair for the first time there and expected it to turn out looking extremely brittle and damaged after I was done, but they actually did a pretty good job in conditioning it and it turned out looking very healthy and bouncy.
The prices aren’t too unreasonable and for the quality they offer, it isn’t too much to fork out, and it’s pretty reasonable.
